I just watched Daniel Terhorst-North's talk at Kotlin conf, having sadly missed it in person (nothing to do with being hungover on day two of the conference). Daniel is the originator of Behaviour-Driven Development and gave a talk titled 'The best programmer I know'. A few interesting takeaways: - You don't need a degree to be an exceptional programmer - Everyone is a kinesthetic learner. Some people might lean towards seeing or hearing things, but everyone learns through doing, so just start and iterate as you go. Lean into uncertainty. - Invest in the product - not the code - Watch your users and find out what frustrates them - TDD pays off. Daniel's team at BP won a software quality award for their trading system. Unlike other teams, they found zero bugs during six weeks of UAT, thanks to TDD. BP paid them to stay on for the UAT period, which they spent in the pub. If that's not an incentive to learn TDD, what is?" - Explore different languages, tools and paradigms to give you more options and help you solve specific problems throughout your career - Help others - teaching is the best way to learn - Overall takeaway for me is that soft skills are clearly equally as important as hard skills in software engineering Worth a watch. https://lnkd.in/e8bau4X9

Holding more frequent 1:1's initially Seek feedback from team Stay close 𝗙𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 We all make mistakes when taking on new responsibilities  Provide both reenforcing and corrective feedback Observations + Impact = Actionable feedback Learn from mistakes Celebrate the wins P.S How do you support new Tech Leads?

Lately I've been tinkering with a curious little hobby project: Building a hosted search service in Node.js, powered by Luca Ongaro's MiniSearch, to facilitate out-of-process indexing and searching of Umbraco content. Being able to view the source of a page is how I learnt a lot about how websites came together and developer tools gave me the biggest insight into how CSS layouts were put together. My thoughts on the move away from standard HTML:

React 19 was originally anticipated to be released back in May during 2024 React Conf but we're now heading in July and there is still no release date in sight. The initial feedback on React 19's new features was rather positive, new hooks, no longer having to worry about memoization, etc. As developers started using the release candidate more they encountered massive performance issues when using suspense boundaries. If sibling nodes under a suspense boundary previously triggered asynchronous data fetches, those operations would execute in parallel. Under React 19 that has changed, they are now executing sequentially. The React team's response can be summed up as "you're doing it wrong, this new way is better", which if you rewrite your code it could be but this is a rather large change that will negatively impact applications that utilize suspense and don't rewrite. TypeScript 5.5 – It's a Banger! It's been slightly more than two weeks since the release of TypeScript 5.5, and if you haven't explored the latest updates yet (just like me 😊), I highly recommend checking out this insightful video by Matt Pocock [https://lnkd.in/gdVeWBni] The new features include Set methods, regex syntax checking, inferred type predicates, and many more exciting additions. My favorite update is the new tsconfig template variable configDir, which enhances support for monorepos. Setting up those three levels of tsconfig used to be quite tricky, and this update makes it significantly easier. Staying on the edge of things, updated my NextPress to use Turso (Sqlite) instead of postgres as I think they offer the better storage options for people who are just getting started / running content sites. This is still in progress as Payload CMS v3 is in beta, and there isn't even docs for their Sqlite adapter yet... Back in the days when the world wide web became a thing, David Flanagan's "JavaScript - The Definitve Guide" from O'Reilly was my JavaScript reference book. Nowadays, it's Dr. Axel Rauschmayer's "Exploring JavaScript" (2024 edition), previously known as "JavaScript for impatient programmers". I can really recommend it and don't know a better reference for everything related to JavaScript. Free to read online, can be bought in several ebook formats as well. #javascript #frontend

I've worked with companies that have full test coverage and I've worked for clients that have no tests. Why is it usually these two extremes? We all categorise bugs into critical and lower, so why isn't it more common place to have tests for just critical functions? I'm working on a library for a side project and using TDD but don't plan on having unit tests for all of the front end although I will probably end up using snapshots.

Can your team get past your pull request bouncer? One of the problems with requiring all PRs to be approved is that it assumes that all the code that’s merged in is the best it could possibly be. But there’s always times where something is needed more urgently or the PR gets so big that people struggle to review it effectively. Being honest about your codebase and admitting that everything could be better frees you up to merge in so long as your tests pass. Let your tools maintain things like code formatting. Reviewing the code could happen even before a PR is made on a call or from pair programming. And even after it’s been merged, if there’s a good reason to make it better. True continuous integration speeds up your feedback loop and lets your teams get more done – leading to more engineering experience for the team and a stronger codebase.

Code readability: prefixes. If you've got a method which checks if a status is true or false, instead of calling it 'status', why not try 'isStatus' or 'isPending'? If you've got a method which checks if someone has replied, don't call it 'replied', call it 'hasReplied'. In my opinion, it's better to hint at whats being returned. Lots of micro-improvements like this make your code easier to read.
