Something I've been pondering for a number of years and finally got irritated enough to post... How have IT suppliers, especially SAAS providers, managed to remove the concept of a resolution time from their service contracts? Clients pay them to deliver a service and yet, retain all the risk for the supplier not delivering, even when suffering significant service impact. The only material element that is offered is what they pass off directly down to the Cloud suppliers, Availability, retaining no risk themselves for the pain that they can inflict through bad management of services delivered by them. Surely it is within the supplier's gift to restore services to the last known working configuration within a decent timeframe so clients can manage the expectations of their customers? I get, with shared code bases, that actual fixes can be difficult to estimate and guarantee, but restoration should be manageable and actually represent a supplier's confidence in the ability to deliver its services to its clients. Time to push back against this?

What a day!!!! Festival of Work at ExCeL London today. Emma Hall , SJ Hood and I have had a fantastic day. We managed to catch up with many vendors today from HiBob, elementsuite, IRIS Software Group, Remote, SAP, Jigsaw Cloud, UKG, Immedis, a UKG Company, Access PeopleHR, Humaans, PayEscape Ltd, Civica , PayFit UK, Deel, Moorepay, ADP, Culture Amp, xcd Personio, Zellis , Ciphr, TrustID, Cezanne HR, AdviserPlus, MHR to name a few sorry to those of you who we didn't managed to get to. #thanks you to all #vendors that gave us their time on video today we will share those soon!! key take aways from me: - #AI is a hot 🔥 topic across a number of vendors in the industry -Traditional Tier 1 vendors are now looking at ways to offer more out of the box products that can be implemented quicker and cheaper with the view that the system will grow with your business -#integrations are becoming more out of the box meaning that barriers to use the best functionality in the market place are being removed. Giving clients more flexibility. -Some interesting things happening in the global payroll space with vendors doing things a little differently to offer client better flexibility and global visibility whilst keeping in country payroll providers. - Some of the traditional Tier 1 vendor werent exhibiting this year but we're the hr technology event last month. -Clients want to get quicker return on investment when implementing new software.

Life Expectancy? No not mine but any new ERP systems being subscribed to- I've used the word subscribed as nobody seems to Licence anymore. This question raised it's head in a Project Kick Off Meeting yesterday where the Client is about to replace a very old legacy system which has been in daily use for some 15 or more years. How long should the new subscription be for - 3 years, 5 Years, 10 years? Have the days of an Annual Licence, renewed automatically each year, gone completely? We tend to depreciate Hardware over a short period of 3 or 4 years so is the time coming where we effectively and literally write off Software in the same time frames? Is a 10 to 15 year life expectancy for an ERP system a thing of the past?

The losses at Birmingham City Council are quite staggering, and could top £200 million - for the implementation of a piece of software. OK, it's complicated stuff, but what should have cost £19 million will be 10x more. Why? I'm sure a public enquiry will find out, but is this the right way to implement technology in local government? From my experience, in local government and healthcare, we leave individual councils and health authorities to make the same mistakes over and over. Where is the shared knowledge and learning? I believe that the government should offer IT services to councils and build country-wide centres of excellence that can gain from the economies of scale - both knowledge and financial savings. Then councils can get on and do what they should be doing - looking after local people. The UK needs a total rethink on the delivery of IT within the public sector, because the skills needed are clearly lacking and the degree of complexity (plus implications of getting it wrong are so huge) are increasing exponentially.
