I couldn’t agree more with this post! AI won’t solve your data problems - it only highlights them! The solution… you ask? A cross-functional data strategy - but not one that’s all talk no action! So, what did I learn from launching my Discord bot last Friday? A few things, but the biggest was that the overlap between 'people who take part in a twitch-streamed pub quiz' and 'people who know code' is large, and yes they will find it amusing to repeatedly attempt code-injection attacks and DDOS attacks. 😈 My bot did not fall over. Not once. We did, however, see some very funny behaviours in response to the code-injection attempts, and the DDOS attacks highlighted that the way my bot handles commands could be improved to have less 'blocking code'. 😬 Other than that, I have a short list of improvements to make, and then I can turn to the requested 'front-end' web interface (that I've been putting off, because it needs to be secured to 'Discord users with a certain role', and that's going to require some head-scratching and in-depth documentation reading!) 👩‍🎓

We have some adoption and other developments to report for the noslegal non-commercial, open source, legal data standards community and taxonomy work. The attached press release includes quotations from - two of the founders (Jacob Capleton and me) - David Chalmers at Shepherd and Wedderburn and Alice Laird at Howard Kennedy about adoption at their firms - CJ Anderson at Iron Carrot and Robert Florendine at iManage about their companies' involvement - Eric Eck about what he's doing to introduce noslegal to more organisations in continental Europe We have an event in London on 2nd October in which we're going to look at where we are and what comes next. While 'community' is a word that I'm quite cautious about using, it fits well here: there's been a great collaborative spirit in the efforts of a significant number of people over several years now and one thing we'll be discussing at the October event is how to build on that in practical, supportive ways that go beyond standards development (important though that is). Anyway - it's been a long road since noslegal was conceived in 2020, but it's been really encouraging to see this public adoption and support. p.s. our London event on 2nd October, kindly hosted by iManage at their EMEA HQ is now at max capacity (50) for the venue, but if you are interested in participating please let Jacob Capleton or me know by DM and we can put you on the waiting list in the event that people who have signed up can't make it. Great fireside chat here at LONDON TECH WEEK 2024 (which has a chunky AI content strand). Yoav Shoham (AI21 Labs) spoke about how an LLM is like deploying a car engine in terms of how much needs to be wrapped around the LLM to make it into a car (in order to truly useful in an enterprise environment). He also spoke about the fundamental need for reliability in order to build trust in the use of an LLM-based Generative AI solution. Great questions from Alexandra Ebert at MOSTLY AI.

AI and law: two things. 1. Just had a first look over lunch at what seems a rather valuable paper, generously released by the Addleshaw Goddard innovation team on their experiments with LLMs for contractual clause extraction. Conclusions meaningfully summarised at pages 42 - 44. And lots of useful detail through the paper. Why do organisations get the user experience so badly wrong? I've spent some time thinking about positive and negative customer experience recently and then I received this email from British Airways (sorry for cheating on you Delta Air Lines...). With all the personal data they hold about me you'd think they could make it a bit more...personal. Where does it go wrong? Not enough testing? Poor design? Lack of product mangement? All of the above? In my experience these challenges usually come about either because the delivery team don't really put themselves in the shoes of the user, or because updates and iterations are made over time and no one ever stops to look at the overall experience with fresh eyes. How do you break the cycle? Feedback. Feedback. Feedback. Do whatever you can to ask your users what works and what doesn't. Empower them to criticise even the things they think can't be changed. Then demonstrate you're listening with tight feedback loops. Oh...and make it easy for them to give feedback - y'know, by just letting them reply to the email... Its been an eye opener for me at London Tech Week. Met with lots of entrepreneurs and investors and here are some of my key takeaways thus far. 1. Its really hard to raise money on follow on rounds at valuations that founders are ok with. Kudos to those who are able to do so. 2. Term sheets for earlier stage companies are tough to come by (depends on the sector). 3. The team is so key for investors-start-ups need to show focus. 4. Having the right advisors and mentors at an early stage is important. 5. Fostering an entrepreneurial eco-system is important to start-ups. 6. Innovation as a jobs driver- great example of how NYC transformed itself into a great ecosystem for start-ups, especially after 2008. The role of collaboration between the private and public sectors is key. Really cool that the Global Start-Up Ecosystem Report 2024 (GSER 2024) was released by Startup Genome at the conference. My highlights from the GSER 2024 report: 1. Series A funding is projected to increase this year (good news). 2. Cleantech and AI show strong financing trends (no surprise). 3. Of particular interest are the city rankings in the GSER 2024 of the start-up ecosystems. Three Canadian cities make the top 40- Toronto-Waterloo at 18, Vancouver at 34 and Montreal at 39. The top 5: 1- Silicon Valley, 2-London, 3- NYC, 4-Tel Aviv and LA (tied for 4th), 5-Singapore. There is strong growth in some Asian cities' ecosystems : Seoul, Tokyo and Singapore have risen in the ratings as has Miami by a whopping 7 places. The resilience of the start-up sector is evident. 🚀 Why Wales Needs More Tech Entrepreneurs to Prosper in the Age of AI This post was inspired by the recent Welsh tech event organised by Technology Connected and hosted by Ogi, which highlighted critical issues and brought together venture creators Ben Allwright, Mark Sweeny, Sophie Mason (thediffabledceo), VCs, Daniel Sawko, and others to discuss the future of tech in Wales. I often ponder: why does Wales underperform in most economic indicators in the UK? Where are the jobs of the future going to come from? As a founder of Presto Dental, a pioneering dental software startup, I reflect on these questions while we build our tech company from Cardiff to export worldwide. 📊 Let's look at the facts: 👉 The tech sector in Wales contributes only 6% to the economy, compared to 10% in London. 👉 Only Admiral has IPOed among Welsh companies. Why does Wales struggle to create global tech companies? What needs to change? Here is my take on creating a blueprint for a thriving tech ecosystem in Wales: 1. Embrace Entrepreneurial Spirit: Wales needs to unleash its entrepreneurial spirit. We need more courageous tech entrepreneurs to build future companies. 2. Foster a Risk-Taking Culture: Support those willing to take the plunge into entrepreneurship. 3. Increase Investment: In 2022, only 1.5% of UK venture capital was invested in Wales. We need policies and incentives to attract VCs to early-stage startups. 4. Attract Talent: Position Wales as a top destination for global talent, leveraging our high density of knowledge and skills. 5. Diversify the Economy: Move away from relying heavily on government jobs. A varied economic base will drive innovation and growth. Welsh founders often sell more equity when raising funds compared to their counterparts in England, hindering future growth. There's also a lack of competition among VCs investing in Welsh tech startups. What is stopping us from building a tech hub like Estonia, Israel, or the Silicon Valley model? Here’s what we need more of: 👉 Leverage Our Talent: A high density of talent and knowledge is our advantage. 👉 Encourage Bold Risk-Takers: Support and celebrate risk-taking entrepreneurs. 👉 Attract Venture Capitalists: Incentivize VCs to invest in Welsh tech startups. Remember, Michael Moritz, the chairman Sequoia Capital one of the world’s most successful VCs, is Cardiff-born and has strong ties to Wales. 👉 Foster a Culture of Paying It Forward: Encourage successful businesspeople to invest in the next wave of tech companies. 👉 Government Support: The Welsh government must incentivise tech companies that are founded and HQ in Wales to flourish and compete globally.
