I find it strange to read that leaders think there is a start and finish date in transformation. Change is constant this has to be built into the culture of an organisation. There are projects to improve process or outcomes, these need full focus of leadership.

Disruption is not the enemy... It's a fact of life As a writer and researcher, I'm sensitive to words, how they are used and the impact they have on us. A well-known consultancy recently issued a report on how creating an agile, empowered workforce would defend the business against disruption. While I'm sure the recommendations in the report are sensible and useful, what caught my attention, like a bad note in a chord, was the assumption underlying the title: defend against disruption. The assumption is that disruption is an invader that must repelled, therefore we must gather our forces and be on the defensive against it. This metaphor has consequences. If a nation or business is at war, it is very different from being at peace. The state of war shapes the actions we take, and the energy with which we take these actions, which then leads to particular results.  Sometimes this state is necessary and appropriate to the situation... but not when it comes to disruption. Disruption is not an invader who must be defended against. It is part of a natural process, like exhaling in breathing. We don't go to war against exhaling. We try to get the best out of the step, emptying our lungs of toxins so we are healthy and have space for more air to come in and bring oxygen.  If disruption is not an invader, but a natural process, how does that change the way businesses address it? By seeing disruption as a: ➡ Neutral and inevitable part of existence. Accept it, embrace it and learn how to take advantage of it. This can mean seeing disruption as the opportunity to make real and meaningful changes because the barriers to change are much weaker at this moment. ➡ Process that, like all processes, will end. Knowing it will end helps businesses understand they must do certain things for a time and then when the step ends, they will have to change again. The problem occurring now is that once businesses start on a path they tend to stay with it as long as possible. This does not work and puts the business out of the rhythm of the disruption process, basically out of step with the times. The words we use and the stories these words tell matter. The more we pay attention to this and choose them well, the more effective and successful we will be as leaders and as businesses.
