What do you do if you want to become a trusted and reliable resource in venture capital?

When you're just starting out, I recommend building expertise in one specific area. Become an expert in that niche, and begin building relationships, dealflow and content around it. Become the "go to person" on a topic, and then work on expanding out from there.

Here's how you can maximize virtual meetings in the venture capital industry.

We do all our first meetings with startups via Zoom, so it’s a level playing field. Having a focused agenda helps make these intro meetings efficient. We ask all startups a standard set of topics so we can get the information we need to decide about moving into diligence.

Here's how you can propel your career in venture capital as a mid-career professional.

My advice for early and mid career VCs is to build expertise in a specific area. Pick something you’re excited about and become an expert. Build content, social media and speaking engagements in this area. Over time, founders in this space will begin seeking you out, and you’ll also be more helpful to your portfolio companies. You can start with a narrow area and expand it over time.

LinkedIn is a great platform for building your network in VC. Here are a few tips I've learned: 1. Create a great profile 2. Choose a few themes you want to write about 3. Say something different to cut through the noise 4. Use photos and graphics 5. Contribute consistently over time 6. Post early in the day 7. Respond to comments

Here's how you can impress Venture Capital firms with your entry-level candidate qualities and attributes.

Sourcing is the most important - and hardest to learn skill - for entry level people in VC. Choose a theme (or couple of areas) to be an expert in, and build relationships and content around that topic. If you can show VC firms that you can source differentiated dealflow, it shows you could be an extremely productive member of their teams. It takes a lot of hustle and creativity, but positions you to be much more successful in VC.

Here's how you can strengthen your professional network as a mid-career professional in venture capital.

Focus on quality over quantity of interactions. Find a group of like-minded people that you want to collaborate with, and make the effort to build relationships. Small group lunches, one to one coffees and curated dinners tend to yield stronger relationships (and deal flow) than big events. Build a CRM of people you have invested with or want to invest with in the future. Putting the effort in for face to face meetings goes a long way!
