About

PhD candidate studying the ecology of genetically diverse vector-borne diseases in natural rodent host populations. I am enthusiastic about Wildlife Disease, Epidemiology and Zoonotic disease and have been fortunate enough to be able to explore these topics previously during my undergrad and more recently as a Research Assistant in the Epidemiology Department of the UoA.

I lead on the organisation of the G7 Chief Veterinary Officer (CVO) meeting, held on 4th May 2021. The discussion was focussed on the importance of wildlife health to human and animal health, as well as international trade. In particular the discussion addressed three key themes: wildlife health surveillance, intelligence sharing and risk communication. Preparation included engagement with international stakeholders and senior animal health & welfare leaders as well as the drafting of several preparatory materials, including a short “One-Pager” highlighting the importance of the meeting to stakeholders. Further, I rounded off the project by drafting the agreed meetings’ Chair’s summary, which can be found on the official G7 website. This piece of work was presented during an intervention by the UK Delegate (UK CVO) at the World Animal Health Organisation (OIE) 88th General Session, in front of 182 member countries. The meeting and associated outcomes have helped the UK develop the national and international discussion on pandemic preparedness and the potential for cross-over of zoonotic pathogens from wildlife to livestock and humans. The outcomes will continue to be relevant to several international zoonotic and One Health research initiatives. Lastly, I prepared a short reflection from the meeting, published by the UK CVO, Christine Middlemiss, on the government’s veterinary blog. Next to this larger project, I also contributed scientific expertise to several smaller pieces of work, including the Defra response to the report “COVID 19: make it the last pandemic” by the Independent Panel for Pandemic Preparedness and Response.

Further, I played a role in building capacity for VL elimination and research in India, through producing the "India Kala-Azar elimination Programme Molecular Manual for VL elimination" together with the team. This work culminated in in-country training, with myself visiting the All India Institute Of Medical Science (AIIMS) in Patna, Bihar State.

As part of my Bachelor thesis I worked as part of a laboratory. My work included screening blood samples collected from rodents in the field in Assynt (West Coast, Scotland) for infection with the hemoparasite Theileria microti (formerly Babesia microti). My work was focused on molecular techniques for parasite detection i.e. PCR and Gel electroporesis. Moreover, I was able to add ID of common tick species from Britain into my repertoire.
