One step forward two steps Black? We want to hear your experiences of what it’s like to be Black in PR and comms today. Together with PRWeek UK and Opinium, we are opening our One Step Forward Two Steps Black survey to uncover inequity where it exists, recognise successes in creating a diverse pipeline and retaining talent, and crucially - to provide a benchmark for the industry to make change. The inaugural One Step Forward Two Steps Black survey in 2020 found that almost half of Black communication professionals had never received an internal promotion, with talent having to move to a different agency or company to rise up the ranks.  Has progress been made? ‘You can’t really measure the impact of PR’. I hear that said so often that sometimes even those of us working in the sector can be at risk of internalising that belief. Which is why it’s so uplifting when a client takes the time to write in on a Friday afternoon to say ‘the result of the press coverage [that Rostrum generated] is a 25% increase in website traffic and a 50% increase in form completions’. That’s a measurable return on investment from your PR programme.

It's Halloween AND our performance review deadline at IPG Mediabrands UK today - eee scary!👻 Jokes aside, at IPG Mediabrands, we have a clear, annual performance review and goal-setting cycle. And I think it's great because... 🎃 It's important to feel confident and comfortable discussing our achievements. (see post from 2023 following our Brag Better event!) 🎃 This is an opportunity to reflect on the last year and consider areas for development and progression in the upcoming year. 🎃 Receiving constructive feedback is crucial for our career development and progress. 🎃 Reflection allows us to evaluate the aspects of our roles that we enjoy and those that may need improvement. 🎃 Reviews provide an excellent platform for open career discussions with managers. Anyone else agree that reviews are beneficial and not as daunting as they seem?

Cannes-did conversations. It's probably the thing I most enjoy about attending the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. Sure. I enjoy the educational presentations, the parties, the opportunity to meet old friends and make new ones. But it's the candid conversations I hear around me that often deliver the most joy - and the greatest impact. Milling about after a System1 happy hour that had earlier featured a "fireside chat" with Jon Evans, Rory Sutherland, and Mark Ritson, I listened in on a conversation that Mark was having with Tamara Littleton and Andrew Tindall about some comments Mark had made earlier about brands that "rainbowed" their logos during Pride month (prompted by a column Mark had written previously on the topic). I won't recount the conversation here, because Mark has already done that (see the link to his telling of the story in the comments). What stuck with me, as I witnessed the conversation unfolding, was the power of honest dialogue to foster the opportunity for a transformation in thought and action (with an obvious tip of the hat to the participants who committed to really hearing each other). We know that when it comes to social concerns like advocating for diversity, it’s difficult to move brands from talk to action, and moral arguments, sadly, aren’t enough. In those instances, turning to research can help make a business case for action – which is exactly what System1’s new research does. Beyond moral arguments for inclusion and visibility, the research demonstrates that “gay ads are as effective as any other ad with broad audiences and are much more effective with LGBTQ+audiences.” These findings are similar to SiriusXM Media's Studio Resonate Sonic Diversity research, namely that casting more Black voices in general market spots improves ad favorability with Black listeners, with no negative impact on ad favorability or effectiveness with broader audiences. While discussions about diversity, equity, and inclusion with advertisers and brands (and sometimes with each other) can be difficult, they’re not impossible. We need more research to support the moral arguments, but we also need to work at fostering dialogues rather than a debates. We need to listen to be heard. Hats off to Mark, Tamara, and Andrew for doing just that. Here's to more Cannes-did conversations.
