Through my coaching and workshops, I often find that leaders at all levels are (at best) hazy on the 'Vision' and 'Mission' of the organisation... and therefore aren't able to articulate, nor be motivated by, how they specifically contribute to it! My recommendation is to add a paragraph to every job description that explicitly details this contribution, and how the 'Vision' and 'Mission' would be in jeopardy without it. I've stumbled across this excellent conversation whilst researching for our new Aspire Programme for new or aspiring leaders. It includes two awesome thought leaders, authors and communicators Simon Sinek & Charles Duhigg. They discuss Charles' book 'Supercommunicators' [great book btw] and how we need meet the other person where they're at in our conversation. For example, there is nothing more annoying than when we 'just want to be heard' and the other person jumps to fix..... grrrr. The Institute of Directors (IoD) recently posted about workplace stress and burnout, it's quite an interesting article, you might want to take a look. It's more commonplace than you might think and 'just 51% of participants agreed that their organisation addressed the potential impacts of stress and burnout'. Healthy organisations do the hard work of formulating a set of unique values that describe, and affirm the culture (the behaviours) they’re seeking to shape. After all, how can you call people up to something you’ve not specified? But once we’ve got a set of values, how often do we ensure that those values - which are supposedly essential - are acting as a filter for our decision-making? How to we ensure that our decisions match our values? The same is true for us personally. We all have things that truly matter to us, whether written down or simply held in our hearts. But when was the last time we double-checked that any decision we make matches those values? Maybe it’s worth taking time out from time to time to ask the question, personally and professionally, are my decisions matching my values? If not, it’s inevitability going to create some internal conflict and anxiety. How brave are we prepared to be to ensure our lives are aligned?
