Tennis Coaching Shouldn’t Be a System In my recent research into coach education and development, one thing stood out: the obsession with systems. Systems are structured frameworks designed to produce consistent outcomes, but applying a rigid system to tennis coaching can be counterproductive. The Problem with Systems Systems tend to apply a linear approach, assuming a set path will achieve a certain result. Tennis, however, is dynamic and ever-changing, where no two players or situations are the same. A rigid system often leads to a cookie-cutter style of coaching, lacking the flexibility needed to develop adaptable and resilient players. Why a Non-Linear Approach Is More Beneficial Tennis is inherently non-linear. Players develop at different rates and respond uniquely to coaching. A non-linear approach embraces this complexity, focusing on exploration, self-discovery, and adaptability. The Benefits of Non-Linear Coaching 1. Personalized Learning: Coaches can tailor methods to individual needs, rather than forcing players into a rigid framework. 2. Greater Adaptability: Players are better equipped to handle the unpredictability of matches. 3. Fosters Creativity: Encourages critical thinking and innovative solutions. 4. Long-Term Development: Focuses on growth throughout a player’s career, not just immediate results. Conclusion Tennis coaching shouldn’t be about fitting players into a system. Securing accreditation from the #ICF International Federation of Coaching was no small feat—it was a journey filled with challenges, from accumulating the required hours to submitting a sample coaching recording, and culminating in that intense 4-hour written exam. I had heard many accounts from fellow coaches, and most agreed: the written exam is not easy. But I was determined. I set the goal in January, aiming to achieve it by Q3, and here we are—I did it! The process was grueling. By the second hour of the exam, my vision was blurring, and I felt like my brain 🧠was overheating. I could almost smell something burning—probably my brain cells getting fried! There were moments when I nearly gave up, but then the ego-driven side of me, let’s call her Sophie, kicked in: "No, you’re not giving up. You’re not walking out of here without passing. Get your S*** together!" 🏆 I have to admit that it was, John Raymond (仲睿盟) MSc, PCC , who truly elevated my coaching skills to new heights. He was my Level One instructor during a time when we were all confined behind Zoom screens, navigating the challenges of remote learning. Despite the virtual barrier, John’s presence was magnetic. His calm, insightful approach, and the way he engaged with each of us, left a lasting impression on me. Over time, John became more than just an instructor; he became a mentor. He challenged me to push my boundaries, to dig deeper into my practice, and to embrace the nuances of coaching with a level of finesse I hadn’t realized I was capable of. His feedback was always constructive, guiding me to refine my approach, to listen more intently, and to be fully present with my clients. John’s influence on my coaching journey has been profound, and I am incredibly grateful to have had him by my side throughout this process. Jiu-Jitsu: The Gentle Art of Leadership? Jiu-Jitsu, literally translated as "gentle art," empowers smaller individuals to overcome larger opponents. This core principle extends far beyond the mats. Jiu-Jitsu emphasises technique, leverage, and timing over brute strength. A smaller practitioner can use their opponent's momentum against them, achieving control through throws, joint locks, and chokes. This philosophy translates beautifully to leadership. The most effective leaders aren't always the loudest or most physically imposing. Great leaders: **Utilize their team's strengths: Just like a Jiu-Jitsu fighter redirects force, a leader leverages the talents and expertise of their team members. **Focus on strategy over brute force: Dictating the terms of engagement and utilizing tactics is key in both Jiu-Jitsu and leadership. **Remain calm under pressure: Maintaining composure under duress allows a Jiu-Jitsu fighter to capitalize on openings. Similarly, great leaders stay collected during challenges, inspiring their team.
