This article by Saskia Brechenmacher is not to be missed, especially the part about building sectoral solidarity. It’s one thing to say this is needed, it’s another to actually prioritize and fund the connective tissue and mediating work this requires. The Horizons Project mission in a nutshell. “Reinforcing this form of sectoral solidarity should be an important priority. Like in many countries, the nonprofit sector in the United States is fragmented and diverse. Organizations are divided by issue area, and advocacy groups often are disconnected from those focused on charity work and service provision. Divisive issues such as the ongoing conflict in Gaza have created fissures. Moreover, even among advocacy organizations, few currently have the bandwidth to focus on the legal and political environment for civil society in addition to their core areas of work, be that elections, workers’ rights, criminal justice reform, or other topics. In the coming months, funders can support greater coordination and knowledge-sharing by resourcing cross-issue working groups, convenings, and resource platforms focused on threats to civic space in the United States. Existing civil society networks and infrastructure organizations like InterAction, Independent Sector, and the Council on Foundations can play an important role in these coalition-building efforts and help connect groups with experts that can provide guidance and advice (or with activists and organizations that have navigated closing civic space in other countries). Importantly, such efforts should bring in civil society stakeholders beyond the narrow circle of prodemocracy and civil rights actors, including professional and business associations, labor unions, media outlets, community foundations, and religious organizations. Key goals should be to raise greater awareness of current and potential future threats and to foster a shared understanding that these challenges imperil civil society and civic freedoms, not just left-leaning and progressive organizations and activists.” 🔗 in the comments

‘Women do not want to pump on the toilet’ This statement caught my attention while I sat across two caucasian men at the dinning room table, having a drink and rest after all three of us cycling in Rotterdam with three kids for half a day. It started from one man (H) mentioning the magazine cover he saw (see below) and the discussion on lack of private environment for breastfeeding women to pump. So the only place left is in the cubical in the toilet. If you have used breast pump before, you would know there is not place to keep secure the pump bottles, the breast pump and tubes even if it doesn't need to be plug into a power outlet or you have practiced advanced juggling to avoid spillage. So here it is, women do not want to pump on the toilet. Let's put the main article aside. I brought up, the stewardess is called '空姐' in China, meaning young stewardess. When the word '空嫂', meaning stewardess who has had children, it was a cultural phenomenon that I recall growing up, knowing H is an airline pilot. H then said, stewardess and women in public service back in the days (probably 60s, 70s) used to be fired when they turned 25. I said, I’ve recently been following a Chinese historian talking about life for the emperors and general public in Qing dynasty. She said the women who served in forbidden city were selected when there were 12 or 13 and retire from their service at age 25. They can then go out of forbidden city to establish family and have another life. Two different perspectives on women leaving the workforce involuntarily and by system design in two different continents. The conversation went on about what happened to both men's mother. One had children, and never finished her university degree. One migrated to Australia, had children and could not work (due to visa issue). Both stopped their aspiration and career, raised a family instead. When they resumed in their professional life, they started miles behind of male counterparts. When I asked the two mothers, how would you say if anything is different being a mother back then and now, one said 'there is a choice back then, and now women has to rush back to work due to economic pressure'. So this is the tough choice women nowadays make, where to sit, and where to pump, when to go back to work to pump breastmilk for young children. This has led to my mental stew to my thoughts on what has becoming a mom enabled me as a founder. I will write that in another post. #motherhood #motherhoodpenalty #worklife #familylife

We are an hour and a half into the United Nations hearing as to Human Rights and Disabilities in the Netherlands. The answers to the question given can be wrapped up: Campagnes(practically speaking this is that they make a nice poster and hang it up, usually not in the facilities themselves but somewhere on the street, New policies or programs that they would like to implement(that have nothing to do with extreme abuse and suffering of many people over the passed years and has not yet been implemented and applied, and there is no guarantee that the created policy, as you can see in their previous answers, takes seriously or even understands correctly the plight of our people) and the last excuse they created is that you can report unaddressed complaints at the College voor de Rechten van de Mens or the De Nationale ombudsman. If you are disabled and being abused in care, please tell me how you can in any way, shape or form, even feel safe to contact these organisations and where are people being let know about their rights? There is structural misuse of the policies created, up to this point, by "care cowboys", that has resulted in thousands being abused, mistreated, assaulted, and falsely imprisoned. Please explain how you are going to rectify this now and recompensate citizens? Rights are taken away by means of coercion(potential loss of care) from the age of twelve. Parents are coerced to sign a paper of permission to treat their children with a seperate set of obligations and decreased set of rights. I apologise but not only are the questions posed too kind(so far) but also the answers of the Dutch members on hearing are nothing but an entire cognitive dissonance as to actuality of the experience of a huge amount of people that need extra care and have a right to this care in our country. We obviously have a huge fight ahead of of us.
