News from the University of Glasgow: following significant growth in both research and teaching activities over the last five years, we have launched the new Division of Urban Studies and Social Policy to coincide with the start of the new academic year 2024/25. The Division brings together three new Subject Groups: (1) Place and Built Environment, led by Nicola Livingstone and James White; (2) Social and Urban Policy, led by Cindy Gray and Mark Wong; and (3) Urban Analytics, led by Jing Yao. As one of the architects of the new organisational structure and following three intensive yet enjoyable years as Head of Urban Studies, I have handed over the leadership to Annette Hastings as our new Head of Division. Together, we all look forward to the next chapter of our academic enterprise. Essential reading for FE leaders, FE maths leaders and FE maths teachers.

GCSE students in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland will soon receive their results, but how does the grading system work in England? GCSEs in England now use a numerical system from 9 to 1, replacing the old A* to E grading. This was introduced in 2014, with full implementation by 2020. The highest grade is 9, while 1 is the lowest with U remaining ungraded. Grade boundaries, set annually by examiners, determine the minimum marks needed for each grade. A 4 is considered a standard pass, while a 5 is a strong pass. Many sixth forms require a minimum number of 5s or 6s for further study. The shift to numerical grades was aimed at making GCSEs more challenging and transparent, with a focus on final exams rather than coursework. Additionally, it allows for clearer differentiation among high-achieving students. But did these changes achieve its goals? Today Advance HE published a blog co-authored by our DVC, Prof Deborah Johnston MBE, articulating our position that effective partnership with PSRBs will be key to enabling the pedagogic innovation needed to prepare graduates to become the workforce of the future. In the blog post, we invite contributions that showcase examples of working with a PSRB to innovate accredited provision, such as through pedagogic innovation, inclusive academic delivery, or novel assessment methods.
