Smith Myers Communications Ltd is proud to announce its integral role in the Cormorant Search and Rescue Helicopter Mid-Life Upgrade (CMLU) Project. Their ARTEMIS Mobile Phone Detection Location System has been chosen as a key component of this transformative upgrade, enhancing search and rescue capabilities for the Royal Canadian Air Force | Aviation royale canadienne (RCAF). As part of the CMLU Project, Canada’s AW101/CH-149 “Cormorant” SAR helicopter fleet will undergo a significant upgrade, aligning with Norway’s SAR capabilities. Leonardo has been awarded the substantial $1 billion CAN contract to lead this initiative, covering 16 aircraft and extending the helicopters' life expectancy to 2042+. Smith Myers' ARTEMIS system brings innovative mobile phone detection technology to the forefront of search and rescue operations, enabling precise location accuracy and reducing search times. This advancement will ensure a more efficient and focused rescue effort, ultimately saving lives. Andrew Munro, Managing Director of Smith Myers, expressed gratitude for being part of this crucial SAR upgrade, highlighting the company's commitment to providing cutting-edge solutions for critical operations. Gian Piero Cutillo, Managing Director of Leonardo Helicopters, emphasized the program's impact on enhancing Canada's all-weather search and rescue capability. The collaboration under Team Cormorant, which includes Leonardo, IMP Aerospace & Defence, GE Canada, and Collins Aerospace Canada, signifies a collective effort to advance SAR capabilities.
