 I wish I understood this before I set up my Event Business. … Many people who venture into running their own event businesses, often referred to as event entrepreneurs, do so because they've previously worked for someone else and believe they can do it better on their own. I can relate to this, as I started my own event business in 1996 with the firm belief that I could excel in the field. As your business grows and becomes more profitable, your confidence in its success also increases. However, the challenges multiply as well. When you're just starting and making around £5,000 a month, it may seem manageable. But as your monthly income grows to £50,000 and you have five or six employees, pension plans, National Insurance, and other complexities to deal with, it can become overwhelming. These are the kinds of issues you didn't have to worry about when you were comfortably working as part of another event company. These are some of the questions I wish I'd been asked before I started… What's my endgame here? Why am I doing this? What are my goals for this business?

Swift returns this Summer Whilst the live event wilderness of 2020 is beginning to feel like quite a long time ago, it has undoubtedly played a pivotal role in the rise and rise of the popularity of corporate hospitality, with 2024 set to be one of the busiest years on record. All those months at home with virtual meetings and home schooling, left all of us missing the visceral, immersive joy of live experiences and since sporting and music events started taking place with live audiences again in 2021, corporate hospitality has grown and grown in popularity as a marketing tool. Companies have realised that the quickest and most effective way to broaden a relationship, to open a door or to say thank you, is to spend quality time with a customer in an environment where the magic and energy of the performance becomes a shared, “forever experience”. With more and more senior executives working from home as well as from the office, having a chat over a glass of wine at lunchtime is not always that simple to arrange, but an invite to a sporting or musical event is likely to guarantee at least 4 hours quality time, for a relatively small investment (in the great scheme of relationship marketing). The 2024 hospitality calendar is absolutely jam packed with blue riband events including The Olympics in Paris, The Euros in Germany, Andy Murray’s last Wimbledon, Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour, high quality international cricket, as well as the most exciting finish to a Premier League season for years. Many events are already close to selling out, earlier than ever before.  With general admission tickets also selling out incredibly quickly – Glastonbury sold 200,000 tickets in under an hour – private customers are also looking at corporate hospitality as a way to guarantee their participation in an event, with better located seats and an all-inclusive experience a bonus. Stadiums and arenas offer (close to) restaurant quality food, fewer queues, improved connectivity and a quality experience from the moment you arrive until the end of the day. Live entertainment brings people together and it creates a sense of belonging and an authentic connection. This connectivity is a huge asset when it comes to doing business and is hard to replicate with any other type of marketing event. With tens of thousands of fixtures and gigs taking place across the UK throughout the year, for all tastes and for all possible budgets, it is no surprise that more and more sold out signs are going to be seen as the year progresses. #eventprofs #hospitality #events

Whether you are working on a large event with multiple teams and stakeholders, Or just a small event with one or 2 stakeholders, There is one common element that can see you deliver seamless and successful events, Or is going to make your event planning very difficult and stressful. Quite often what can trip us up is one of the simplest things that we have total control over. Our communication! How we communicate, What we communicate, The way in which we communicate it. Making sure it has been received and understood to whom you are communicating it to It runs through everything!  Every element of your event! Ensuring the brief is clearly communicated and understood. The objectives and outcomes for the event have been clearly communicated and understood. That everyone on your team, supporting to deliver the event is clear on their role, what they are responsible for and what your expectations are. When there is a misunderstanding or something, even the smallest thing, isn’t clearly communicated, It can have disastrous effects across the operations with your teams and the overall experience of organising and executing the event. Over my 20 years planning and executing events, I have always come from a place of ‘over communicate’, And ensure that everyone on the team feels safe and supported to share their concerns or when something isn’t going well. Ensuring that you have the right structure in place to bring the teams together, at least once a week, to go through the status of their work and raise any roadblocks is a great way to keep the communication channels open. Allowing you to get all the information you need to make the right decisions as you move through the event planning process. “I know we didn’t have the budget for a site visit BUT… The venue was too small. It was a bit run-down. There was nowhere for the buses to stop so delegates had to walk to get to the venue.” <…the client continues with a list of the not-so-great things about this venue…> Well, duh. If there’s no budget to see the venue, you’re essentially buying a cat in a bag. Venues, or any other suppliers, will want the business so their website will be pretty, capacity charts will show the absolute maximum you can cram in there and they will sing their own praises. So unless you go and check it out to make sure it is what the great sales people say it is, you can’t really complain that it wasn’t as expected. I ALWAYS urge my clients to invest in a site visit before committing to a venue as it has proved time and time again to be the best investment when it comes to your event. #eventprofs, do you agree?

Let’s talk events… what are *your* event highlights as a “punter”? Why do you attend and ultimately buy a ticket to an event? Is it the ticket price that appeals to you? The marketing to draw you in? The entertainment you’re going to watch and enjoy? The add ons, such as a fairground, photo and video booths and instagrammable moments that may present themselves? Or is it maybe the food and beverage you go to enjoy and indulge yourself in? Is it the boujie feel and vibe of the event to feel like an elevated version of yourself? Possibly the people you’ll meet and mix with? Or that you’d like your senses hit from all angles? I’d argue that it’s all of the above, which is why events are so difficult to target and pull together from concept to delivery. But no challenge is impossible, and I believe every event can be tailored to suit everybody’s needs and answer each of the above to create measured success.
