(Some of) my top takeaways from Labour Party Conference: ⚡ Heat networks are not expected to be part of GB Energy. The Warm Homes Plan is currently seen as the home for heat networks. (Lots to unpack there!) 🤸‍♀️ For Miatta Fahnbulleh, Minister for Energy Consumers, making sure that heat networks "intentionally" result in community benefits is a top priority. 👷‍♀️ Jonny Reynolds, Secretary of State for Business and Trade, reinforced that the heat networks industry needs to make sure that our green jobs are good jobs, because "not all green jobs are good jobs." 👏 Bill Esterson is championing heat networks, raising the opportunity they provide for decarbonisation and local growth at events across conference. 💚 The unions are aware of heat networks - and want to work with the heat networks sector to create clear pathways for fossil industry workers into heat networks, and opportunities for local supply chains. 📣 Industry made elevator pitches on heat networks as a decarbonisation, jobs and local growth opportunity to Ed Miliband, Sarah Jones, Rachel Reeves, Darren Jones and Jacqui Smith 💺 More than ever, heat networks have a seat at the table at conference. They are being mentioned at events more and more, becoming part of the 'norm'. (Our advocacy as a sector is working!) 🤝 It has made a huge difference being here as part of a group of heat network developers, working together to campaign and reach ministers on shared messaging. In UK #energy #retail change is inevitable, it’s always been the same, businesses come and go, portfolios are bought and sold, and unfortunately people are made redundant. As most people in my energy network will know the latest shifting of the chairs was yesterday when it was agreed the Opus Energy SME portfolio would be sold to EDF (UK), completion expected Q3 2024. To any of the people at Opus Energy impacted by the sale and facing redundancy here’s are a few words of advice and an offer. 😧 First thing, don’t panic. You’ve got a bit of time to prepare for the post Opus world. 🖇 Take in the news and seek to understand your redundancy terms as soon as possible. ✅ Lots of people in the energy business get made redundant. Good people will find new roles quickly. 💪 Don’t wait for somebody to knock on your door, take control of the situation. 🖊 Make sure your CV is absolutely up to date and slick. 📝 Make a list of your key skills and the things you love doing. 🤝 Connect with industry specific recruitment agents, there are plenty of good ones around*. 🤓 Start to revise interview questions and answers. Plenty of examples online. 📞 Ask for advice. You’ll find people are generous with their time. 📃 Produce a single paragraph summary of who you are, what you’re great at doing, your achievements, and what you want to do next. It’s useful to share with people. 💡 Consider if you have options outside of traditional employment. Will any redundancy payment be enough to buy you time to start your own business? Is it time to pursue a passion project? ❌ By the way, don’t do anything daft to jeopardise any redundancy package. Finally, here’s an offer. Energy & Utility Skills 2023 Inclusion Measurement Framework identified that women now make up 30% of the energy and utilities sector workforce - up from 26% in 2022. The findings from the WUN survey are truly eye-opening. They underscore the pressing need to confront gender disparity within the utilities sector. As someone deeply invested in recruitment and talent acquisition, I am genuinely concerned about the potential impact of these challenges on the industry's ability to attract and retain top talent.   It's disheartening to learn that one-third of female utilities staff are contemplating leaving the industry within the next three years. Issues such as not being taken seriously in professional roles not only impede career progression but also contribute to a toxic work environment, ultimately dampening morale and productivity.   The prevalence of unconscious bias adds another layer of complexity to this issue. It's imperative for organisations to tackle this head-on. Implementing measures like unconscious bias training and standardising hiring processes can pave the way for a more inclusive workplace where every employee, irrespective of gender, feels valued and respected.   Here at Utility People, we are committed to supporting businesses within the utilities sector in addressing these challenges. Drax sells 90,000 SME customers to EDF Energy - These customer meter points were originally acquired by Drax Group, as part of its purchase of Opus Energy in 2017, a transaction valued at £340 million. In its announcement to the London Stock Exchange, Drax noted that various other segments of the Opus business have been integrated into its core industrial and commercial (I&C) energy supply operations over the past seven years. This includes the renewables business, which manages the group’s power purchase agreements (PPAs) with renewable energy producers, alongside other specified components. Drax sees these actions as reinforcing its commitment to reducing carbon dioxide emissions and advancing its Energy Solutions (Customers) division, which focuses on industrial and commercial clients, renewable energy and energy services. The group confirmed that its Energy Solutions segment will remain unaltered by the sale of Opus SME assets and the group’s expectations for Energy Solutions earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) remain unchanged following this transaction. https://lnkd.in/eePcCQXe
