  🚀 Exciting Changes in National Grid's Future Energy Scenarios! 🚀   National Grid ESO Future Energy Scenarios (FES) is entering its thirteenth cycle. This annual report delivers a comprehensive analysis of the potential future of the UK's energy system, guiding strategic planning and policy decisions towards achieving net zero. While last year's scenarios explored a wide range of outcomes, this year's pathways are aligned to decarbonise at the same pace, aiming for net zero by 2050. The different pathways can be seen in the graphic below and include:   • Holistic Transition🌱: Net zero via electrification and hydrogen, strong consumer engagement with smart homes/EVs. Highest renewable capacity, unabated gas drops post-2036, moderate nuclear, lowest hydrogen power, high supply-side flexibility.   • Electric Engagement🔌: Net zero through electrified demand, smart tech reduces energy use. High peak electricity demand, high nuclear/renewables, low natural gas post-2035, high supply-side flexibility with storage/interconnectors.   • Hydrogen Evolution🏭: Net zero with hydrogen in industry/heat, low consumer engagement, hydrogen boilers, strong EV uptake. High hydrogen power plants, lower renewable/nuclear needs, low natural gas post-2035, flexible hydrogen storage.   Here's why we believe this transformation to pathways is a game-changer:   🔄 Strategic Focus: Unlike scenarios, pathways provide a targeted route to net zero, creating a clearer vision for the future, and addressing the need for robust strategic energy planning. 💰 The national grid needs £60 billion of investment but has less than 10% of the capital needed to fund it. Making grid-scale changes is a slow process too 🐌 Our Managing Director, Bruce Woodman, has shared his thoughts on the need to address this shortfall with Energy Now, along with a shopping list of other important ‘pro-renewables’ policies that would be essential to support the transition to net zero:  💨 An end to the de facto ban on new turbines in England   ⚡️ Restructuring the requirements on the Electricity System Operators (#ESO) and Distribution Network Operators (#DNO)  💧 Setting national standards for the development of renewables-to-hydrogen projects Although new policies would be helpful, businesses don’t need to wait for policy change to make a difference to their own energy and emissions. As of today Wednesday 9th October, the UK energy market remains volatile, with key developments shaping the landscape across gas, power, oil, and carbon markets. Gas prices have softened, with the UK NBP Day-Ahead (DA) price settling at 94.35 p/therm, reflecting a decrease from yesterday's levels. The market has reacted to forecasts of milder temperatures expected next week, easing some pressure on demand, particularly as LNG arrivals in Europe continue at a steady pace. Norway's gas exports remained stable at 311.2mcm/day, despite a five-day extension to maintenance at the Kristin gas field, now set to resume operations on October 14. Looking at UK gas demand, the system has opened 19mcm/day long this morning. Lower-than-average temperatures, around three degrees below seasonal norms, have led to a rise in UK LDZ demand. Gas-for-power demand is also up as wind speeds have dipped, reducing renewable generation over the next five days. However, wind levels are expected to rebound after this period. On the LNG front, send-out nominations remain stable at 12mcm/day, with three cargoes expected to arrive in the UK before October 27, alongside a number of deliveries scheduled for Northwest Europe. In the oil market, Brent crude prices edged higher to $77.18/bbl, bolstered by ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and lingering concerns over the Chinese economy. Despite this, the price reflects a sharp $3.75 drop from the previous day, suggesting uncertainty continues to cloud the market outlook. UK power prices have followed a similar downward trend. The Day-Ahead Baseload price has fallen to £81.19/MWh, down from £89.09/MWh the previous day. Cooler temperatures have driven up heating demand, but lower wind generation is expected to remain a factor in driving up gas-for-power demand in the coming days. Market sentiment indicates that the decline in power prices could be temporary as forecasts suggest wind generation will pick up next week, stabilising the mix of energy supply. Carbon prices, however, have eased, with the EUA Dec 24 trading at €60.29/tonne. The UK ETS also saw a slight uptick to £36.01/tonne, reflecting some of the broader market uncertainties linked to energy prices and upcoming weather forecasts. Storage levels across Europe remain high at 94.61%, keeping a lid on any further risk premium being priced into gas markets, despite the approaching winter season. UK individual gas storage sites are similarly well-stocked, providing some reassurance to market participants. The interplay of LNG arrivals, storage capacity, and weather-driven demand will continue to influence market prices across the board. With colder weather expected, gas demand is set to stay elevated, but a recovery in renewable output may ease the pressure. Keep an eye on developments in the geopolitical landscape and economic data from China, both of which will likely weigh on market sentiment and energy prices moving forward.

This week’s International Investment Summit in London provided a valuable opportunity to discuss this with government officials, led by Prime Minister Keir Starmer and industry executives.    As the leading power generator and a leading renewables developer in the UK, we are already generating electricity for around 12 million homes with an installed capacity of almost 10 GW.     With 2.2 GW of renewables currently under construction across offshore and onshore wind, solar, and storage, we intend to invest around €8 billion net until the end of this decade in developing clean energy projects in the UK and further strengthening our presence. Ofgem has detailed plans for "significant" investment in the electricity transmission network and outlined a framework for supporting delivery of the projects recommended by the Electricity System Operator (ESO) in the transitional Centralised Strategic Network Plan 2 (tCSNP2). National Grid ESO have published their Future Energy Scenarios (FES) for 2024 this morning, offering a comprehensive look into the strategic pathways necessary to meet the challenging decarbonisation targets set by government. This year's publication marks a significant change in their approach, moving from broad scenarios to focussed pathways. Here at LCP Delta, we will continue to digest and take on board the key messages and developments over the coming days but at first glance, here are some of the most interesting points from the report :   💡 Strategic Pathways Over Scenarios: This year's FES has transitioned from exploring multiple scenarios to defining three clear, strategic pathways aimed at achieving net zero. This change emphasises the importance of targeted, decisive action in transforming Great Britain's energy system.   💡 Critical Technologies: The document highlights the system need for Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES), Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS), and Hydrogen and the necessity for government to reduce investment uncertainty for these technologies. However, there is a clear need for more government action in this area.   💡 Locational Pricing Debate: The report eludes to the ongoing debate around locational pricing, noting that market reform is essential to provide real-time locational signals to deliver cost savings to consumers. Australia keeps moving further towards Grid decarbonization ! I always found Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) is doing a great job at creating graphics to visually convey key information! In this latest one released in their last quarterly report you can see a few striking things: - distributed PV generation alone (excluding utility size solar parks) is covering around 13% of the total demand on average, which is quite impressive when you think that they only produce during the day. - the development of Grid scale battery is progressing at an impressive rate, with a lot in the pipeline for the years to come! - this transformation is also beneficial for consumers with significant positive impact on spot prices ! #energytransition #renewableenergy
