Why Do Some Brands Hate Pedigree Wholesale Limited? It seems to us that as soon as certain brands realise they can go direct to the end consumer, they start undermining Pedigree. Every day, we get emails and calls with people saying ''I know you order direct with Pedigree, but by ordering through us, if you spend X, you get Y'' Yes, by cutting the middle man, you can potentially make more, but from a Pet Shop's POV, there are many pros of sticking with Pedigree: - They have a massive network. - They are lovely to deal with, are very helpful and they do indeed support independents. This point really needs to be double clicked on. Independent pet shops simply want returning customers, and DESPISE being undermined by some companies that say they want to help when all they want is to cut you out. - By ordering multiple items from them, you don't have to put many different orders with many different suppliers. I wonder if businesses undermine relationships with other suppliers to make just a few more pounds when, in the end, we're all here for the long term. Range Relevance About 20 years ago I visited some stores in London with the senior commercial team from Somerfield. As we entered one store we were met by a pallet display of disposable barbecues. They had been on offer in store for more than a week and, despite the sunny weather, they had sold none. Numerous reasons were given by the store staff and the other attendees as to why this would be the case, but the real reason why they weren’t selling was more fundamental than any that were given. The store was surrounded by tower blocks. The stores customers had nowhere to have a barbecue. Disposable barbecues were simply not relevant to the store’s customers. In a different store we discovered another giant display of 3ltr Coke bottles (remember them). Again, they were not selling despite the price promotion. Again, lots of reasons were given as to why this would be the case, but the real reason was more fundamental. The store had no car park. The 3ltr Coke bottles were irrelevant to the store’s customers because they were too heavy to carry home. I was reminded of this earlier today when looking at the magazine stand in my local Co-op. I live in Wokingham (which is in London’s commuter belt). The store is near the centre of a 500 home new build housing development. While I understand the relevance of magazines like Vogue, OK, Ideal Home, Radio Times and Good Housekeeping to the local residents, I wonder how many copies of Combat Aircraft get sold each month? I highly doubt it is more than 1 (if that), let alone the 6 that they have available. An old sale trainer of mine used to say “You can’t sell a bald man a comb, because it is irrelevant to him.” The same is true when it comes to selling products online. Just because you can range your entire assortment on Amazon or grocery.com, it doesn’t mean it will all sell. Why? Because some of your products will be irrelevant to the consumer needs, customer missions and shopper journeys of your online target audience. Relevance is the key to selling anything online.
