Having the ability to influence others as a software engineer is crucial. 👉 You might need to influence your Product Owner's idea of scope for a given feature because you know about potential technical trapdoors further down the line... 👉 You might want to convince someone on your team of a simple approach when they're itching to use a new and complicated technology... 👉 You might want to use your influence to drive a change in team culture. It's no good knowing the best solutions if you can't influence others to go along with you. A big part of influencing others is understanding the emotions and motivations of those around you. 🟢 That's why it's so important to lift your head up from your code and spend some time building relationships and getting to know your team. Influence isn't just a management thing.

I'm not just a startup founder... When my investors invested in Stitcht they were surprised by the detailed mapping of the Stitcht service that I'd done to understand how the whole business is delivered and centred it around the customer experience. Rarely do founders apply this level of thinking to their business. I did it because I come from the world of digital product design and delivery and have spent many years running teams to deliver apps, websites and platforms to clients as a Product Management expert. I had a lightbulb moment. Is team leadership included? What about line management? What about delivery? Clarity is key 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 Engineer → Tech Lead is a tricky transition. Holding more frequent 1:1's initially Seek feedback from team Stay close 𝗙𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 We all make mistakes when taking on new responsibilities  Provide both reenforcing and corrective feedback Observations + Impact = Actionable feedback Learn from mistakes Celebrate the wins P.S How do you support new Tech Leads?

Measure value delivered and not points completed if you really want to judge an Engineering team. Points help you predict how much work you can take into the next sprint. If you start using them to measure performance you're going to handicap your ability to predictably deliver software. What matters to people - snazzy features or stuff that works? Oddly enough, it's stuff that works! So why do software companies focus so much on snazzy features and release shoddy products? Part of the problem is the idea that what we need is to "do more with less". But that's wrong-headed. In my annual litmus test of the software development job market, I'm noting how in the UK "UML" now seems restricted to the control systems space. Seeing avionics, railway control systems, manufacturing control and network stuff. "Safety-critical" has come up a couple of times, interestingly alongside "TDD", with no mention of Formal Methods. And UML's a *really* niche requirement now. Haven't seen "business analysis" or "systems analysis" or "enterprise architecture" - UML's old stomping grounds - mentioned at all in the job ads. It's no wonder nobody's asked me about UML training for well over a decade!

I really don't think most of us appreciate just how much A.I is going to automate away from modern UK businesses. It won't come from many of the current corporations, they are too slow and stuck in the old ways. It will come from new agile companies. Forced to automate, to get competitive advantage against bigger established competitors, like us. We're just getting started on the journey in our business and already we've got AI Bots managing a lot of our tasks. It gives us competitive advantage against our competitors, and drives better value for our customers, which translates directly into their bank accounts. Picking your career has never been more important than it is now. Do you go for the current crop of big companies, used to paper based processes and learn the "old ways" or do you go for a new company that is working out what the future of business looks like and steaming head first in that direction. I know what I'd pick if I was starting again.

"Forcing a framework on an organization and then policing it to a point where it becomes just as rigid as the framework it’s replacing is going to continue to fail." I've seen this happen multiple times and this is true not just of Agile, but of any framework. You typically see an org, and even on the team level, borrow bits and pieces of various frameworks, for better or worse, with varying degrees of success. I'm curious to see how Agile will transform in the next few years considering how modern digital products are shipped, particularly in today's climate.
