Finally, the #EU 🇪🇺 has taken a monumental step towards accountability with the approval of the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Law #CSDDD. This marks a significant milestone in ensuring that big corporates are held responsible for their environmental and human rights impacts across global value chains. 🌱 While the path to this #legislation wasn't without compromise, it establishes a crucial framework for more sustainable and ethical business practices. Now, it is imperative for #EU countries to strengthen these laws over the next three years. ⚖️ As an advocate for #sustainability, I am committed to continuing the push for robust #laws and enforcement mechanisms to meet our climate targets and safeguard our planet. 🌏 In this journey, I have had the privilege of getting to know the great work of numerous #SustainabilityLaw 'ushers' and encouragement from my peers at the European Law Institute (ELI), inspired me throughout the completion of my doctoral research within the sustainability compliance framework 🎓. Recently María Ortiz Pérez The Aspen Institute Energy & Environment Program (EEP) convened an important discussion to launch a new project to co-create and chart a new vision for the role of international and multilateral institutions in addressing #climate change. After the discussion, ahead of #COP29, a triangle of tensions keeps me up at night: 1. #Complex vs. #Complicated: Addressing climate change is a complex problem. Yet, institutions treat it as merely a complicated one. Complicated problems and systems, while hard to solve, have defined solutions via blueprints. Complex problems have too many unknowns, and require trial and error. Adapting our expectations and approach to complexity may enable us to overcome ideological entrenchment. 2. #Targets vs. #Pathways. Governments and the #COP process are overly focused on targets - 2030, 2040, 2050, #netzero. These discussions take up more political capacity and time than actual pathway planning to build infrastructure. For example, raising the EU's target from 40% reductionsto 55% took 1+ year, and while not on track, recently another effort updating the EU NDC to -57% EU failed. While climate ambition is important, sketching out plans for deploying the infrastructure delivering the emissions reductions is even more important, yet neglected. For example, only 11 #NECPs - which my colleagues Nicole Pavia and Alejandra Muñoz Castañer worked to reframe as #planning tools - have been submitted, months after the deadline. 3. #Process vs. #Outcomes. The climate conversation focuses on the outcomes of climate action. Let's take #decarbonization of #emerging markets as an example - a necessity for net-zero emission (on any timeline). Yet, the process is not inclusive of #developing country voices or perspectives, nor provides sufficient support for #scaling and #manufacturing #infrastructure in developing countries. Diversifying perspectives on climate will drive a more globally equitable approach to tackling the issues. Analysis from my brilliant colleagues Lily Odarno Brian Mukhaya Moussa P. Blimpo and Prudence Dato has shown that over 90% of the research on the African energy transition was published after the 2015 Paris Agreement, and 60% was published between 2018 and 2021. And research has focused on a limited sub-set of African countries and technology pathways. This suggests that African countries could have entered the Paris Agreement with a limited knowledge base to inform their standing and the first nationally determined contributions (NDCs) commitments. As my colleagues David W. Yellen Noah J. Gordon and I wrote: "More fluidity in the international system will require countries to be more flexible in their approach, calling for smarter actors to push the limits of multilateralism. However, that does not necessarily mean that climate action will stall. Thanks for sharing, and I really enjoyed this read - its a thorough piece on a challenging topic and the analytical framework of looking at people's needs at Source, in Transit and at Destination is very helpful. It offers solid technical recommendations and ideas on how to include migrants and displaced populations in social protection systems, particularly in response to the major drivers of displacement such as climate change and conflict. Very rich food for thought across a number of system delivery components. As I reflected on it, a few gaps stood out to me: 1. The intersection between climate and conflict as primary drivers of unprecedented forced migration needs a more integrated approach in designing social protection programs. This heavily affect the Sahel, Mental health and psychosocial support, disaster resilience, and climate adaptation are missing elements that are crucial for this group. 2. Conflict-sensitivity, prevention and social cohesion similarly are topics that need direct attention - there’s room for social protection systems to act proactively in conflict-prone areas to help prevent displacement before violence erupts, or build social cohesion and trust between displaced and host communities. 3. Long-term climate resilience: Beyond shock-response, we should focus on climate-adaptive livelihoods and prevent displacement from environmental degradation. The paper lightly discusses public works, but not from climate adaptation angle, even though there are really impressive experiences with climate-adaptive cash-for-work across the Sahel. 4. There's a need for better inclusion of informal economy workers, who often miss out on traditional social protection schemes. Overall, how to access social insurance and how to reach the "missing middle" for migrant or displaced populations is an area that requires a lot more discussion. 5. The sustainability of funding is discussed but is absolutely critical—how do we go beyond donor cycles to ensure long-term support? Also here, the intersection of conflict with climate and the big hope for vertical climate funds Looking forward to seeing how this conversation continues to evolve! #socialprotection #displacement #migrants #sahel

🌍✨ Credible Contributions: Bolder Plans for Higher Climate Ambition in the Next Round of NDCs ✨🌍 Great report from Energy Transitions Commission, highlighting the opportunity for collaboration between industry and government to enhance the next round of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) 🌱 🌐 To combat climate change, NDCs can set ambitious targets linked closely to national policies. 📈 A clear direction and reduced uncertainty will help accelerate the deployment of clean energy technologies. 💡⚡ 🏆 Success in the low-carbon transition has been driven by industry’s response to government targets – speeding up deployment and reducing costs. Industry play a critical role so governments see that a net-zero economy is technically and economically achievable. 🌟 📊 The report shows that reflecting current policy commitments and technological advances in the next NDCs could almost triple overall ambition. 🚀 🔑 Higher ambition from both government and industry is essential to stimulate the rapid deployment of clean energy technologies, but ambition alone won't drive progress. Daniel Abrahams, PhD & I argue in a new journal article that #conflict mitigation may be a means to #climatechange #adaptation. First, conflict exacerbates climate vulnerability. It negatively impacts livelihoods, social cohesion, inequalities/grievances, governance/institutions, and fundamentally shifts scales and sites of need. Addressing it, then, may increase adaptation opportunities. Second, conflict assessments and conflict-specific tools may enable a better understanding of local dynamics as they relate to shifting sites of power and risks, often defining factors of vulnerability. These tools may also help adaptation programming to avoid future conflict risks. Third, conflict mitigation programming often focuses on issues of governance and institutions, which ought to be amplified by and aligned with adaptation efforts. What does this mean for #peace, #adaptation, and #development actors? Rethinking & re-engaging with conflict mitigation as a central part of adaptation work in fragile and conflict-affected settings, especially as it relates to programming as well as monitoring and evaluating adaptation and/or conflict prevention “progress”. The blaming of journalists by politicians in Slovakia in the aftermath of shooting attack on the prime minister is sad. By asking uncomfortable questions and being non-complacent journalists are doing their job. Five years ago a journalist and his partner were killed in Slovakia when investigating corruption linked to political elites. This context must not be forgotten. In this critical moment, journalists are portrayed as being the ones who create discord, polarisation and encourage hate in the country. This discourse continues to undermine the credibility and legitimacy of independent journalism. It further divides people and makes us even more vulnerable to more violence. Low trust in media and low use of media channels which follow ethical standards is bad news for democracy. Distrust, indifference together with fear make people vulnerable to simplistic and hateful content. Slovakia already has one of the lowest levels of trust in media and also high levels of "news avoidance" (see https://lnkd.in/e8-pe4nq).

#disaster x #climate x #conflict displacement. Today's launch of the IDMC GRID report confirms the number of IDPs increased to almost 76 million in 2023. This is up from the 71 million recorded in 2022. An almost 50% increase over the past 5 years. * There was also an absolute increase in conflict IDPs living in #FCV that are also climate vulnerable. This is mainly driven by increased conflict IDP numbers in #Sudan, #Myanmar, & #DRC. On the contrary, numbers in #Ethiopia, #Mozambique, #SouthSudan, & #Afghanistan have decreased. * The number of people internally displaced as a result of conflict and violence increased by 9% in 2023 (from 60.9 in 2022 to 68.3 m in 2023). * Sub-Saharan Africa, which hosts 46 per cent of the world’s IDPs, was again the region most affected by internal displacement in 2023. Conflict and disasters overlapped in many countries, forcing people to flee again and/or prolonging their displacement. * As in previous years, floods and storms caused the most disaster displacement, including in southeastern Africa where cyclone Freddy triggered 1.4 million movements across six countries and territories.  * 2.9 million movements were recorded by floods in the horn of Africa following years of drought.
