Container freight rates flatten off edging up only 1pc last week THE spike in spot container freight rates has flattened off over the last week, according to UK's Seatrade Maritime News. The Drewry World Container Index (WCI,) which has been seeing double-digit percentage weekly increases recently, was up just 1 per cent over the previous week on July 11 at US$5,901 per FEU. The Shanghai Containerized Freight Index (SCFI) slid 1 per cent to 3674.86 points on July 12 compared to July 5 levels. The question now will be whether increases are simply taking a breather, or this represents a levelling off of container spot rates. While container spot freight rates are at extremely elevated levels, they are still well below the highest levels seen during the pandemic. Drewry's WCI is some 43 per cent lower than its peak of $10,377 per FEU in September 2021. Generally, analysts think it is unlikely that rates will reach the highest levels that were seen during Covid. Signs have not particularly positive last week though with severe storms off South Africa bringing to a halt containerships transiting via the Cape of Good Hope to avoid Houthi attacks in the Red Sea. Looking ahead Drewry commented: "Drewry expects freight rates to remain high until the end of the peak season."

Howe Robinson Partners
There is an undeniable hunger for #containerships currently and whilst many may see events such as the attacks in the #RedSea as the main reason, a more significant driver could be the ‘coming of age’ of the freight market. In its Second Quarter Containership Review and Outlook, Howe Robinson Partners notes that although the rallies in both vessel hire and box markets have slowed in recent weeks, each managed to reach levels reminiscent of the pandemic in a surprisingly short time, displaying a volatility quite unlike the several decades prior to the shocks of COVID. Whilst #freight has been boosted from an early peak season push from a recovering demand base, across a severely disrupted network, the Liners’ chartering strategies have seemingly been working beyond this timeframe. Having had limited tonnage options in the near term for quite some time now, a significant portion of the activity has focused further into the future, with increasing sums and periods being paid for ships, some even delivering towards the latter part of next year. Howe Robinson publishes regular updates on containership charter markets. A train derailment on Tuesday partially blocked intermodal services at the UK port of Felixstowe and could disrupt traffic for a week. A Felixstowe spokesperson told The Loadstar: “We can confirm that a freight train operated by GBRf suffered a derailment on the Trimley branch line at approximately 9.20pm on Tuesday. We are working with GBRf and Network Rail to return services to normal as soon as possible.” #railfreight #railtransport #supplychain #logistics #felxistowe #uksupplychain #portoffelixstowe Stuart Todd reports on the impacts. https://lnkd.in/eJAZa6wU

Our MD, Sue Terpilowski, just spoke with Sam on BBC World Service Radio about the recent surge in container shipping rates, as highlighted in today's FT story, representing CILT (UK). Importantly, we also addressed the critical issue of #seafarers who are risking their lives or facing kidnappings daily in the Red Sea. It's crucial that we acknowledge the vital role they play in keeping global trade moving. #Shipping #Maritime #GlobalTrade #RedSea #SafetyAtSea #CILTUK

New Intermodal Rail Freight Service: A Prime Example of Collaborative Efforts to Reduce Supply Chain Carbon Footprint! Freightliner Group Ltd, in collaboration with P&O Ferrymasters and other industry partners, has launched a new intermodal rail freight service from Tilbury to Manchester Trafford Park. This service, which began on September 30, 2024, is the first to utilize Network Rail’s new Access Charge Discount scheme. This initiative aims to encourage a shift from road to rail transport by offering six months of free track access charges for new services. Tim Shoveller, CEO of Freightliner Group, highlighted the importance of this scheme in achieving industry growth and sustainability goals. The new service is expected to significantly reduce carbon emissions and remove around 10,000 trucks from UK roads annually. John Freyne, Director Intermodal at P&O Ferrymasters, emphasized the collaborative effort in making this service a reality and its impact on reducing the carbon footprint of supply chains. The service will run five days a week, transporting containers coming from Zeebrugge or Europoort onboard a ferry from P&O Ferries, and contributing to a greener economy by cutting carbon emissions by 76% compared to road transport. GB Railfreight has started a second daily service to #Widnes intermodal terminal. The almost inevitable origin is #Britain’s biggest intermodal port, #Felixstowe. The weekday service represents a doubling of capacity for #GBRf on the Felixstowe to Widnes route. For rail freight, in general, it’s a significant capacity enhancement on a critical logistics route between the east and west coasts of #GreatBritain. #railfreight #railfreightnews #railcargonews

Container Spot Rates in China Anticipated to Reach Five Figures. There have been continuous double-digit escalations in container spot freight rates in recent weeks, stemming from a series of factors that resulted in a 140% surge compared to 2023, as stated by freight market tracker Xeneta. Contributing factors include: - Ongoing conflict in the Red Sea region - Congestion and equipment shortage at ports in the Mediterranean and Asia - Shippers frontloading imports in anticipation of the Q3 peak season - The breakdown of labor negotiations and the threat of union action at the US East and Gulf Coast - Deteriorating weather conditions as hurricane season progresses. #ContainerShipping #FreightForwarder

Second freight rail service to link container ports 🚅 A second rail service is set to link two of the UK's largest container ports. Port operator DP World announced there would be an additional weekly rail service connecting the London Gateway and Southampton container facilities. The new mid-week train will be operated by Freightliner from Tuesday. DP World said it would reduce carbon emissions by cutting more than one million truck miles each year. The first weekly service between London Gateway - a large container terminal and distribution facility at Thurrock in Essex - and the Port of Southampton was launched in 2022 to enable swift and reliable freight transit between the two locations. Last year, DP World introduced "modal shift" incentives to use rail in September, paying £70 per shipping container and then £100 from January. The firm said rail's share had subsequently risen from 21% of containers in early 2023 to 35% in March 2024. John Trenchard, vice president of commercial and supply chain at DP World, said there were "clear benefits" to a second rail service. "Providing a cleaner and more cost-efficient way to move cargo across the country is a key priority for DP World in the UK, and modal shift has consistently proven to be a reliable and flexible solution. #railfreight #strikes #containerports #freightforwarding

Infrastructure Focus
🚂 Exciting News for the UK's Rail Infrastructure! GB Railfreight (GBRf) has extended its contract with Network Rail, solidifying its role in supporting the operation and maintenance of the UK's railway network. This extension, starting from April 1, 2024, is a two-year agreement with the option for a third year. The extended contract means GBRf will continue to provide essential services for Network Rail's engineering works and renewals, with up to 16 daily trains dedicated to these projects. Additionally, GBRf will carry on operating bulk services, transporting materials like stone from quarries to Network Rail's Logistics Delivery Centres (LDCs). This helps ensure a steady flow of materials to critical rail locations across the country. The contract also continues GBRf's management of LDCs at Whitemoor, Eastleigh, and Bescot, ensuring smooth distribution of materials and equipment for railway maintenance and enhancement projects. John Smith, GBRf's CEO, commented, "We are delighted to extend our partnership with Network Rail, further cementing our role in supporting the operation and maintenance of the UK’s rail infrastructure." Mark Dickinson, Director of Supply Chain Services at Network Rail, added, "By extending our contract with GB Railfreight, we can continue to move our essential engineering materials safely and efficiently across the country to support projects that deliver a better railway for passengers and freight customers." This extension is a significant step towards a reliable and efficient rail network in the UK. We look forward to seeing GBRf continue to play a pivotal role in maintaining and improving the country's railway infrastructure. 🚄✨ https://lnkd.in/enTpfydb

London gateway looks to surpass felixstowe as UK’s leading port with new berth The opening of a fourth berth at London Gateway next month marks the start of a fierce competition with Felixstowe to become the UK’s largest port. This expansion, funded by Dubai Ports World (DP World), will increase the port’s capacity by over a third, positioning it to challenge Felixstowe, owned by Hong Kong billionaire Li Ka-shing’s Hutchison Ports. Located on the north bank of the Thames, the new berth at London Gateway will extend its quayside capacity to over a mile. With 16 quay cranes, each as tall as the London Eye, the port will be equipped to handle four 400-metre ultra-large container ships simultaneously. The addition of a potential fifth berth could further solidify London Gateway’s ambition to eclipse Felixstowe. #ukports #imports #exports #logistics #distribution
