it's hard to figure out which relationships are worth investing in despite a slow start This is the conversation I had over lunch with Lee Cash yesterday there is such an obvious fit between our technology 🤝 Conferwith does very cool stuff with 1:1 video shopping, finally starting to bridge the gap in bringing an instore experience to online shopping (something I bang on about all the time) they'll provide the people if you want, but a lot of brands would rather their own agents are taking the calls (for obvious reasons) but how can your people take video calls if they're stuck answering a massive volume of repetitive requests? that's where we come in 😎 the synergy is obvious, the brands we work with are similar, our companies are somewhat similar sizes we also happen to share a love of good food and are both massive nerds 🤓 eventually, something huge will come from this relationship for both of us in previous roles, or if I were struggling to hit targets, it would be difficult to justify the continuing investment I have the luxury of being able to have faith in good people and wait for the magic to happen, but I do wonder how much time either of us could devote to things like this if we were struggling commercially!

E-commerce… A buyer or sellers world? Today here at Recurring.Life we had a chargeback, our first as a retailer but not the first I’ve had to deal with over the years, so it’s provocked some thoughts… Let me paint the picture. Customer orders a single walled water bottle, from the UK to be shippped to Mexico. We shipped it - we are international baby! Customer received the item, with no contact leaves us a 3 Star review. Great service, however doesn’t keep my water cold (shortened a bit) We replied to the review, explaining that the item is singled walled and not designed to manage the temperatures, but if they wanted one that did to check out our other listings for insulated bottles We hear nothing… until today when we receive a chargeback notification that the original purchase amount will be removed from our account, plus the £10 fee for the privilege. We now have to submit an appeal to attempted to get the money back… That’s not even a Win / Lose scenario, it’s a massive Lose / Lose for us 🥲 Don’t get me wrong, I am all for buyer protection but I think the process needs to be shaken up. This is worrying on so many levels. Gamifying loyalty programmes to encourage consumers to spend more, during a cost of living crisis. Barely covering up your own cash flow and profitability agenda in the very thin shroud of ‘great value for our customers’. Unregulated in the way that say the gaming industry is regulated. The argument that it is a choice rather than a mandate doesn’t hold water - activity like this is cynically based on consumer psychology and known to adversely affect those least able to make the right decisions Multiple supermarkets copying each other’s approach so as not to miss out. Activity like this gives marketers a bad name. Don’t be that marketer.

OOH collects it's largest half year of revenue EVER in H1 2024 in the UK, according to industry body Outsmart OOH in The Media Leader UK article. Digital screens share of the market was 66% up from 64% from the same time the previous year. In H1, total revenue was also up by 17% to £646m. Digital grew 22%, compared with 9% in classic. As these impressive numbers show, I've joined the industry at an exciting time. With programmatic technology expected to continue to accelerate growth. 🚀

TikTok Shop Raising Seller Fees in the UK Heads up for sellers on TikTok Shop! 🛒 What is the ceiling on retail media? Apparently, Tesco has predicted that retail media will overtake TV advertising by the end of 2025. That's a very bold claim. I spent years at Facebook selling the idea of personalization at scale to brands. The unique data & insights we had around someone's real identity was purported to create the most powerful targeting in advertising. While there was some truth to that, we always used to suggest adding custom audiences to brand campaigns from 3rd party data providers to enhance the targeting. The most desirable 3rd party data came from purchase behavior, which was seen as the most superior form of data. What someone has bought in the past indicates more about what they will buy in the future than any demographic, psychographic, or interest/affinity data. The people in the world with the best purchase history data are retailers--putting aside banks and card companies. As retailers wake up and realize the power of their data is actually a form of market leverage, it's likely that massive amounts of ad spend will shift to retail media next works. Whether people receive messages through online or in-store channels, there is literally no better time for someone to be exhibiting purchase behavior than when they are in a retail store. That said, the retail media & advertising businesses of brands like Tesco, Walmart, and Kroger are still fairly new. Great to attend ExchangeWire ATS London yesterday and bump into lots of familiar faces. Enjoyed the panel on why in-housing your #retailmedia network is the best way to differentiate your Retail Media offering, retain control over your user data and launch innovative formats. Drop me a line on [email protected] if you'd like to know more - when launching a Retail Media Network, start small and scale from there - look for 'low hanging fruit' including server-side tech to circumvent ad blocking - the more immersive your retail media units, the less likely users are to use ad blockers - in-house will provide more flexibility than 'out of the box' retail media solutions. Build for both now and the future. - It's challenging to compete with Amazon on global scale. But retailers have something unique - in-store footfall and unique DOOH formats. Use these wisely! - Use a CDP to harmonise loyalty card transactional data with on-site data. Closed loop attribution and ROPO analysis - Retail media needs to be a business-wide strategy. Click Wars: UK Supermarket Edition In the world of online grocery shopping, every click is a potential customer. But are UK supermarkets wasting their budgets by bidding on their own brand names in search ads (e.g. is it worthwhile for Tesco to bid for people who search for Tesco or would they go into Tesco organically)?   Our latest research reveals a fascinating truth: there's no one-size-fits-all answer - While some industries see minimal return on branded keyword investment, UK supermarkets show a strong correlation between using branded PPC (pay-per-click) and capturing customer clicks. ·        Lidl GB stands out for NOT utilising branded PPC, resulting in a significant 18% loss of searches to competitors! Imagine the potential customers who typed "Lidl groceries" and ended up buying in Tesco! This is a clear example of how neglecting branded keywords can cost supermarkets dearly. ·        On the other hand, Iceland Foods might be overspending on branded keywords. They spend a lot on buying the "Iceland" keyword and lose only 5% of the people who search for “Iceland” to a competitor supermarket. There's a sweet spot for optimal investment, and data can help brands find it. Food for thought: There's an optimal spending point for maximum benefit from bidding on your own brand name. Lidl skipped this entirely, and it cost them dearly. But don't go overboard! excessive spending on branded keywords offers diminishing returns. There's a sweet spot to find! Has Tesco got the power to be number 2 in the marketplace space in the UK? It believe it certainly does and its power is data (Clubcard Data), to be able to offer highly targeted advertising based on what you shop online or in-store. With over 1.1m grocery shoppers a week, it must be taken seriously. Please let me know what your thoughts are.
