Do you want to learn how to help your colleagues brush up on their coding skills, or maybe give your own skills a boost? tl;dr Emily Bache and I are offering a series of four learning hours on TDD, with each one followed by a session briefing for those who want to discuss techniques further or talk about how they can deliver similar content for their own teams. Often we're so busy meeting deadlines that we never find time to focus on our coding skills. And even when we do, we tend to focus on new technologies rather than the underlying bread-and-butter skills that allow us to write robust code in small steps with maximum feedback. But practices like refactoring and test driven development make a huge difference. They allow us to approach coding tasks with confidence, and they're a great target for training budgets, at only 100 EUR per session. THE AVERAGE TENURE FOR A SENIOR SOFTWARE ENGINEER IN THE UK IS AROUND 18 MONTHS 😲 This is a crazy stat but I'm not surprised Software Engineers are in high demand Technology is still booming globally The opportunities Software Engineers have today far outweigh those other professionals have Causing a war for talent Causing Software Engineers to become 'job hoppers' Or so it might seem... Once upon a time, there was no chance I'd send your CV to my client if your profile had multiple positions less than 2 years These days, it's inevitable The average tenure of a Software Engineer 5 years ago was 3-5 years Times have changed The challenge? Companies still want to see longevity But todays market is different and doesn't allow for the same longevity as 5 years ago We recently placed an Engineer whose last 3 roles all fell under 2 years. 1 even fell under 1 year Is she a job hopper? No! She had genuine and logical reasons for each move and each move made sense She was able to fully portray this to our client, was offered and accepted The solution? Work with a recruiter who can see beyond 'job hopping' but is skilled enough to qualify a candidates application taking into consideration their drivers and motivations #beuneek

I've worked with companies that have full test coverage and I've worked for clients that have no tests. Why is it usually these two extremes? We all categorise bugs into critical and lower, so why isn't it more common place to have tests for just critical functions? I'm working on a library for a side project and using TDD but don't plan on having unit tests for all of the front end although I will probably end up using snapshots.

Another ⚠ for those who package their Permission Sets. Specifically now with Summer '24 sandboxes are a thing. You install package permissions might be lost. If you have a PS dedicated for the user who installs your packages - this PS likely does not have the 2 new permissions 'FreezeUsers' and 'MonitorLoginHistory'. When you upgrade the package with this PS in a Preview Sandbox you will loose InstallPackaging from it as this is now dependent on the above new permissions! (if you were to update this PS via Metadata API it would error instead) Confirmed as bug with SF, Known Issue coming soon..

Well that was a trip, decided to move timwise.co.uk to 0x5.uk and go all in on the nerd chic.... out come the yaks and gremlins of internet infrastructure. Github pages redirections broke. GoDaddy can't redirect anything but the root path. Moved the old domain to dnssimple to fix that... you don't get https redirection without the £30/month plan and it's not obvious. Buttondown automated rss-to-email choked, couldn't re-enable it because the paid plan had stopped working so had to re-upgrade that. Finally got almost everything working and redirecting again now, apart from the http -> https redirection with github pages that just seems to be broken, support ticket raised... So much for zero downtime! Imagine if it was a domain that actually mattered, like an ecommerce site! Thank goodness as a professional dev I usually have DevOps and infrastructure experts to hand!
