Can London make itself at home on the South Bank? So asks the Financial Times in an article covering our Bankside Yards masterplan: "The first residential building [within Bankside Yards] will be the 50-storey Opus, designed by PLP, which will be the tallest residential building in central London upon completion in 2026, sitting within a cluster of taller structures that have grown up around the junction of the South Bank and Bankside. “Its form tapers as it rises upward . . . and the tripartite plan allows us to create as many as seven corner units on a single floor, which are spatially different and have floor-to-ceiling windows,” says architect and founding partner of PLP Architecture, Lee Polisano, of Opus. “I feel this is just the beginning of the South Bank as a neighbourhood, but its success will depend on . . . creating truly mixed-use communities.” This is indeed the challenge — creating a vibrant, mixed-use community that safeguards and activates the mid-century heritage of the site. As we push forward with the Bankside Yards masterplan, the transformation of the South Bank is gaining momentum, but its future hinges on our ability to foster a sense of belonging for both long-time residents and newcomers alike. Yesterday, Malcolm Birks, Head of Design and Sally Ormiston, Head of Consulting attended the Building Garden Communities Conference at RIBA. They reflected on a fascinating session on the evolution of modern methods of construction (MMC) for homes and public buildings. The session debated on why the market has of yet failed to deliver ‘better homes cheaper’ at the scale needed to meet the potential that MMC has to offer in environmental sustainability terms. Standardisation seems to be key and the panel offered a perspective that this doesn’t mean low quality and that architectural design can still ensure that homes and buildings built using these methods can be beautiful and of their place; both critical when thinking about how MMC might be used in the rural context. #MMC #RIBA #RuralArchitecture #ArchitecturalDesign
