#Engie Power company Engie announced that it has pre-ordered 5 million tons of nature-based carbon removals from climate finance company Catona Climate. In this week’s post I delve further into my third prediction “Operators will co-invest with renewable energy companies”. This one may take a little longer to play out, particularly for those DC platforms who are PE backed and where that PE also has investments in the Renewable Energy space. Of course, we are already used to seeing this in the market, led by the big US cloud players, who have been buying/securing RE for some time. In May this year we saw Brookfield Asset Management and a major US CSP, announcing new wind and solar farms, to deliver over 10 GW of new RE, with a reported price tag of $10bn USD. Not many CSP’s have that kind of capital and definitely not many Operators, but I still think it’s inevitable we will see co-invests with Operators. For clarity, I am not talking about PPAs and certainly not carbon credits (could we find a cupboard somewhere and put carbon credits in there, along with PUE please?). PPAs in all formats, will remain the go-to method in many markets to secure RE, but in reality, this is a third-party relationship where there is little to no shared risk and reward. I am talking about a step on from that, where the Operator helps directly fund the new RE project and either also acts as the single off-taker or one of multiple off-takers. The first scenario would give the Operator first rights over that RE as it comes to fruition, and at a discounted price compared to the market. So now that Operator can go to their customers, guarantee power in x years and even forward sell that power to customers. In the second scenario, where there are multiple off-takers then the investing Operator would still get the power discounted and/or make money from the sales to other Operators. Is this a conflict of interest? Maybe, depends on your view. For me, not really, each Operator is there to deliver shareholder value, so I can’t see many shareholders being too worried about conflict of interest where money is being made. They may be more worried about the “distraction” of being pulled into an adjacent vertical, but again these two verticals are so entwined now I can’t see it being a big issue. Investors are recognising the symbiotic relationship between DCs and RE, and that securing power is becoming the determining factor in the success of their DC platforms. There are many VCs with existing interests in both verticals and I can see this only growing. No doubt there are different return profiles and payback periods, so yes there may be challenges over the use of the same funds for different payback terms, but that is a challenge of logistics rather than intent. I am not suggesting the PEs will, or are, pushing this, they may well prefer to keep these lines of business separate. For me it will be some of the clever Operators pushing it, recognising that those that have secured, guaranteed, additive RE will become the dominant providers in the market in the future. #evolutiondatacentres #renewableenergy
