Last week Elgin (IL) Genealogical Society contacted me to speak at their September and October meetings. I'll be presenting my two-part military research strategy. Details should go up on their website and social media soon. It is a hybrid meeting so you can attend live or on Zoom. I will be presenting on Zoom. Thursday September 19, 2024 at 7:00 p.m. CDT Research a Veteran Exploring the Basics of Military Research Please note this is part 1 of 2 in military research. All the records DID NOT burn. Have you ever wondered what dad or grandpa did in the war? What happened to your uncle who died? What was training and combat like? How did grandpa get wounded? What happened to the family during and after the war? Answers can be found. In this session you will learn: Where to begin your research at home. What questions to ask. The first part of the research strategy to learn any veteran's story from any 20th century war and and military branch. What records you need to establish the foundation and where to locate them. How to create a timeline of service. How to begin writing the story. I use storytelling along with the records to help you understand the deeper impacts of service. You might want a tissue for the story at the end of this session. THEN on Thursday, October 17 at 7:00 p.m. CDT I'll be presenting Exploring the Greatest Generation Adding Context to the Veteran's Story Please note this is the 2nd part of my research strategy. Research A Veteran is Part 1. Contextual records are everywhere, not just the National Archives! Once you have established what units your service member was in and where they served, it is time to explore unit-level records. In this program you’ll explore: The second part of the research strategy to piece together your veteran's story. How to add to your timeline of service and expand the narrative. Explore various histories, journals, photos, and maps for all the military branches. You will learn about the most valuable foundational records to put your service member into context and write a richer story everyone will want to read. These records help you write the narrative to your stories. They will also help you understand why your veteran was who they were after service, and probably bring up more questions for you to consider. 🧵Quick budget takeaways for Defence (more to follow once the Portfolio Budget Statements) are available: 1) As expected given the recent release of the #NDS24 nothing new in the top numbers. 2) Whilst Defence was mentioned in the budget speech, it really only had a cursory mention. A clear focus on domestic cost of living issues. Understandable given the difficult fiscal environment. However, given the strategic circumstances outlined in the NDS - this demonstrates why we need to convince the Australian public Defence spending matters - our strategic situation is not improving. 3) Clear themes around economic resilience and supply chains. Good to here from a wider national security perspective. Both very important issues - but the proof will be in the pudding so to speak. Need to look at the numbers and policies. 4) @andrewtillett (who’s clearly seen the PBS) is reporting that Defence recruitment and top levels numbers continues to worsen. However, I would say that the Defence growth rate announced in 22 with the Defence workforce growth submission was always optimistic. https://lnkd.in/gipE2i8m Whilst we do need to address the clear recruitment issues for Defence - which the ‘jointery’ recruiting approach isn’t helping, I’m still gobsmacked that nobody is seriously asking questions about ADF structure. There are many ways to create capacity. 5) Good to here veteran support measures flagged in the budget speech - but the detail matters here. There have been many tokenistic measures announced by both Govt’s in recent years to assist veterans - hopefully this will be something of more substance. 6) Whilst there is an increase in Defence spending over the forward estimates and next 10yrs (as we were told when the NDS dropped) - as highlighted when the NDS was released there is still a significant gap in ADF capability over the next 10 (maybe 15) years. This gap coincides with the most strategically unstable geopolitical situation since WWII. This remains a large risk. Op inclusion day. Good to be still and listen to others calling about their experience of working at the Defence Academy. 2 major takeaways for me: Strategic change from above. Inevitable and understood. Tactical change from below. Not required and take space to enhance one's appraisal each year. Most people who talk about the importance of emotional intelligence in leadership appear to be lacking in one particular area........ Emotional intelligence 😂

10 years ago I left Air Traffic Control (ATC) to pursue a career in IT. Getting into ATC was the hardest thing I've ever done professionally (except maybe OSCP!). It took me 2 full years and 3 attempts to pass all the recruitment stages (one per year limit!) And that was just to get into the college! I spent hours everyday learning about aircraft and the aviation industry to prepare myself. It was then 1 full year of college where any failure meant you were off the course. It was then a further 4 years of On The Job training including 2 years of adjacent sector specific training. I did all of that to realise that it was just not my gig! Five years I spent in all! Five years! That's life! At no point did I come across anyone who moaned at the entry requirements for ATC, nor any griping about gatekeeping, nor people saying that they should just be given a chance because they are motivated. The requirements for the job were tough. The barrier high. The responsibility enormous. The complexity of the job difficult. I wanted to share this because it shows the type of effort that you need to be prepared to put in for your first technical role in cyber - maybe not five years worth, but you get the idea. And you might find that once you get it, it's not your gig either! Not everyone is cut out for it. This is not elitism - it's just fact. There isn't a lot of difference between ATC and cyber in this context. Of course, people's lives aren't always at stake in cyber (although sometimes they are!), but we have responsibility to get it right or else organisations or people we work for, or with, can be severely negatively impacted. This isn't an industry where we can always just take a risk on bringing someone on who isn't ready. The whole point of cyber security is to manage risk, not increase it through taking a gamble on resources. This is why you need to take a serious look at what you have done to prepare to enter the industry. Be honest with yourself! Have you really done enough? Are you really ready to jump in head first and defend a multimillion dollar network? Or are you desperate and hoping someone will just take a chance on you? Maybe you are both. But you can't just be the latter! This is not doom and gloom for the sake of it. I'm trying to cut through the BS that is pervasive right now. I'm not gatekeeping, I'm giving you real world advice. I'm not selling a course or webinar so I don't need to get my numbers up and appeal to everyone and sell a dream. Skill up! Don't just rote study for Security+ or take a bootcamp course and think that will be sufficient. This isn't like taking your driving test. Passing a test does not qualify you. Be interested in what you are doing and protecting. Actually interested. If you aren't, you won't care to learn about it properly. The industry is tough. Those that love it find it tough, and sometimes leave it. What chance will you have if you are only in it because of the hype or salary?

One of those articles that should be read by everyone. I support the idea of creating such a MD Decoy Company - and Big Army needs to look at it as well as part of every Brigade. The current wars have shown us that it can not be a Division or Corps asset - it has to work at the tactical level and be integrated into all things if a unit is to fight and survive and win.
