This evening, I had the privilege of attending the 'Women in Entrepreneurship' event, brilliantly organized by Gresham House Ventures and Inspired PLC. The evening was a powerful reminder of how far we've come and the exciting road ahead for Women entrepreneurs. Maya Ward kicked off the event with a refreshing perspective, highlighting some of this year's wins for women in business: - The rise of female-focused funding in the UK, albeit a tiny increase. - Increased representation in leadership roles. - Our first Femtech unicorn. - Important decisions influenced by women for funding women’s health such as Innovate UK’s recent reversal of funding allocations. The Work Continues While these milestones are worth celebrating, they're just the beginning. We must: 1. Amplify women's voices in entrepreneurial spaces 2. Address systemic barriers to funding and growth 3. Foster mentorship networks for aspiring female founders 4. How do you build a brand and create stand-out communications when you're an entrepreneur or start-up on a budget? Honest diary of a CEO: not afraid to say the things you are thinking Resilience: the ability of a person to adjust to or recover readily from illness, adversity, major life changes, etc There has been a lot of talk about resilience this year and it is not a word I am a massive fan of, when I see it in job adverts or people refer to resilience training my heart sinks. Being required to be constantly resilient to be successful, suggests an environment that is not sustainable. Yes, we can all dig in, in the short term, but when resilience is a necessity and a daily requirement, something has gone wrong. There is no doubt, no matter what people say on here, this year has been a doozy. Client budgets are tight, delays in decision making and lack of planning beyond the immediate has had a massive impact on agencies big and small. The proof is out there with continued redundancies, reduced revenues, hiring freezes etc. The “resilience” required to get up every day, chase new business, follow up on ghosted proposals, seek new avenues for revenue, respond to increasing client demands, juggle cashflow, whilst continuing to be an “inspirational” leader is a lot. Being a business leader or an entrepreneur takes a certain kind of person. A massive bucket of self-belief, belief in the team and the game changing work we are doing and a generous dollop of sheer bloody mindedness. This is a role I chose and although tough, it is something I embrace and in a strange way suits my personality. I love a good hustle. But is this a requirement of my team and something I expect day on day, from everyone? No. Working under high levels of pressure, 100% of the time is not sustainable, isn’t much fun and doesn’t produce the best work. So, we all play to our strengths and that works for us. The team need time and space to do their best thinking, deliver exceptional work and have a real impact for clients. We are lucky, as an independent consultancy, we can decide how we want to work. We are not in a holding company, tied to impossible profit margins and revenue targets in this current economic climate, which can only be met by cutting head count and piling the workload onto a smaller team and expecting everyone to do everything. Are there days when I don’t have the energy? Of course. Are there days which end in tears of frustration? Of course. Are there days when even printing a document seems too hard. Of course. But mostly there are days, having the privilege to meet and speak to people who are committed to making a difference, driving real change and tackling health inequities in a meaningful way. So, I celebrate those days and remember this is the WHY, we do what we do. I celebrate my amazing team, the clients who continue to support us and my amazing network who never fail to lift us all up. Before you ask, I am booking a holiday and the OOO will be firmly on later this month.

The latest 'One Step Forward, Two Steps Black' survey from UK Black Comms Network (supported by Opinium and PRWeek UK) is a stark reminder of the continued need for creating more inclusive and equitable workplaces. Overlooked for promotions and awards, experiencing microaggressions and racism, while feeling like they have to tone down their personalities to 'fit in'. No wonder two thirds of Black PR pros consider leaving the industry. As Kamiqua Lake (nèe Pearce) says "For an industry that prides itself on being able to engage, influence and understand people - we have no excuses for not doing better on inclusion." 🎯 I encourage you to: - Read the report. Then read it again and think about how your company can be different - Speak and listen to your Black employees - Ask yourself what you could do better As a process lover, I'd also suggest you: - Check your promotion and retention data. Who is leaving, when and why? Who is being promoted and why (not)? - Review and set clear promotion criteria. Agencies in particular are historically bad at promoting the loudest or popular voices or those that fit a certain image. Make it super clear what someone needs to achieve to get to the next level - What policies do/should you have in place and are they being acted upon? No point having something on paper if people don't know it exists or feel like they can refer to it - Look at how you can provide mentoring and sponsorship for your Black talent. If it isn't available in-house, look externally - Review your training and development offer. Yes, the EDI related training, but also ensure that people are being given the tools and skills they need to excel in their job. ❓How to promote a business when there’s a news drought? 💡Thought leadership. While there’s plenty of debate about the phrase “thought leadership” and what it means; at the core it’s about promoting expertise and that will always be relevant. It’s especially relevant during a dip in news coming out of the business. The purpose of any communications function, agency or professional is to protect and enhance reputation, and to support the sales effort. Thought leadership serves both purposes neatly. It’s an effective way to establish a reputation for being an expert on a topic, which in turn drives financial performance. How? Well, all customers, consumers and businesses, have a choice; and accepting there will always be other factors at play, that choice will come down to value. What is the best that I can get for the money I am willing to spend? It’s no surprise that – particularly for services businesses – expertise is a major part of that value calculation. It is for that reason we have done more and more thought leadership work for our clients in the twelve years since I launched Seymour PR. My peers will agree that extracting the expertise is not always easy though. A few lessons: 💡Sniff out the expert on the topics that are most important to the business reputationally and/or commercially. 💡Note - that individual is not always the most senior person, so make sure you can navigate egos effectively. 💡Show up to the meeting with a lot of open questions and ask for forgiveness at the outset; explain you need to position the knowledge in plain English and that involves lots of questions. 💡 Ask ‘why’ until you understand the intricacies of the subject matter. 💡Don’t let the message get lost in the approval process. Clarity is key. In my experience businesses have a load of expertise but need support from their communications team or agency to ensure it is expressed in a way that sets them out as real experts. PR people, advise your brands to go beyond 'good deeds' in their corporate social responsibility. Corporate philanthropy. Charity work. Scholarship schemes. Building healthcare facilities. These are all good. But brands need to also embrace environmental sustainability. What actions are you taking to ensure your brand is environmentally responsible? We talk about 'care capitalism'. Have you considered the negative impact of your operations on the environment? #corporatesocialresponsibility isn't limited to corporate giving. You should have an environmental sustainability plan, especially if your company's operations clearly impact the environment. We all function in this environment, and we need to strike a balance between a healthy ecology and a healthy economy. And you, the PR specialist, need to provide that counsel to your Management.
