"now I have someone looking out for me, I can look after myself again" This World Homeless Day, we are pleased to share Gideon's story. After spending his whole life in the East End, Gideon experienced homelessness for the first time in his 60s. He's now getting the support he needs for his mental health, thanks to his key worker at Your Place, and is enjoying singing and making music again. We're grateful to Gideon for sharing his story; please read it in full. https://lnkd.in/eggGREAF
About us
Your Place is a charity dedicated to solving homelessness in east London, one person at a time. We’re here to offer hope, a home and a healing place to grow, where people who’ve lost their homes can get the individual support they need within a safe, caring community. Our mission is to build hope and enable lasting change to end homelessness for people in east London. We’re a growing charity, helping people who’ve lost their homes to regain their self-belief and rebuild their lives. We work closely with each person who comes through our doors, guiding them to meet their own needs through one-to-one and peer-led support. With specialist teams and a compassionate community around them, residents make their own journey to independent living — and to a better place. Previously 'Caritas Anchor House'.

Today is World Homeless Day. Rates and stories of homelessness are increasing by the day, with 1 in 20 people in our community of Newham now facing the reality of having nowhere to call home. Our Chief Executive, Amanda Dubarry, spoke with The Guardian's Robert Booth about the very real risk to human life if homelessness funding needs are not met. https://lnkd.in/emUr-SVJ

New homelessness figures released today show that 117,000 households in the UK are in temporary accommodation. They also show a devastating 251.2% increase year-on-year in refugees seeking help from councils after being evicted from Home Office hotels. Alongside other homelessness organisations including St Mungo's and Shelter, we call upon the government to continue funding the Rough Sleeping Initiative, so that we are equipped to help people resolve their homelessness quickly. “What my role comes down to is fighting the corner of the former residents. They’ve often been through challenges in life, and sometimes are still going through issues, so we need to work together to make sure people who have experienced homelessness are comfortable" Funmi is our Resettlement Worker, and discusses the ways in which people are supported once they leave Your Place into their long-term home. Now there's a result! ⚽ The Homeless World Cup is currently taking place in South Korea, and after this morning's incredible result from England, we wanted to congratulate the team, especially one of our residents, who is representing England out in Seoul as we speak. We'll be celebrating the team's success when they fly home next week!

Yesterday, at the Labour Conference in Liverpool, our Chief Executive Amanda Dubarry was part of a roundtable discussion with Homeless Link and other sector leaders, addressing ways in which the new Government can move forward in solving homelessness. Topics included funding challenges across the sector, the importance of the Government's cross-departmental strategy, and the vital role of the third sector. Amanda is pictured here with David Smith MP, Vice Chair of the APPG on homelessness and Paula Barker MP, Chair of the APPG on homelessness.

Our brilliant Head of Facilities, Jacqueline, recently celebrated a big birthday, and asked friends and family to donate to Your Place in lieu of birthday presents. She raised an incredible £532! Well done, thank you, and happy birthday Jacquie! 🎁🎊 Jacquie's fundraising will support our annual residents' Christmas dinner, a calendar highlight at Your Place. Her kindness will have an impact on each and every resident, especially those experiencing social isolation. You can support our work in a range of ways, whether that's a Challenge Event, a birthday fundraiser, or something completely different.
