The Wren Project
Mental Health Care
A UK charity offering listening support for people with autoimmune diseases.
About us
The Wren Project is a registered charity which provides free, ongoing, one-to-one listening support for people diagnosed with autoimmune disease in the UK. Our individualised support helps people feel less isolated and more equipped to face the emotional and social upheaval of living with an autoimmune disease. On the surface, little would seem to connect someone with Lupus to someone with Alopecia or Vasculitis. Yet in each of these incurable illnesses, an individual is forced to live within a body that is attacking itself. While the NHS provides treatment for the medical, the emotional and psychosocial impact of diagnosis is overlooked leaving people feeling overwhelmed, scared, and lonely. The Wren Project was created to meet this need and offer ongoing, 1-1, free listening support. Highly trained volunteers meet with Wrens (participants, recently diagnosed) for fortnightly 50-minute sessions over video chat. We do not offer medical opinions, judgement or advice. We simply listen. We believe this focused, consistent support can help to alleviate the emotional turmoil of a diagnosis, providing tools for individuals to navigate their disease. The Wren Project is underpinned by direct knowledge of how life-changing a diagnosis of autoimmune disease can be. Our own experience with autoimmune disease has showed us how powerless, lonely, and out of control it can feel when one's body reshapes an imagined future in life. At The Wren Project, we look beyond the specifics of each autoimmune disease to address the lived experiences which connect us. We are a community of people living with autoimmune disease. There is no single language to explain our experiences. We help to create dialogue, grow knowledge, and regain control.

A woman living with Crohn’s disease who experienced symptoms for over 30 years, has revealed one of the greatest challenges she faced on her journey to diagnosis was “not being believed there was a bigger issue going on.” In the latest of our Wren Voices series - an initative to amplify the voices of people living with rare and often invisible diseases - one of our Wrens shares their personal story about their long journey to diagnosis. You can read Suky's story here: https://lnkd.in/e_ufyGNc If you or someone you know could benefit from our free, one-to-one listening support, get in touch with us here: www.wrenproject.org

We want to say a big thank you to... The National Lottery Community Fund! They have awarded us £20,000 so that we can pilot our WrenGroups listening scheme. Here our Fundraising Director, Anna Jordan, shares what this grant means to us here at the Wren Project: "We know that living with an autoimmune disease can bring a unique set of challenges including management of chronic pain, fatigue, hopelessness, loneliness and isolation. "Our 1-2-1 work has highlighted a demand from our Wrens to bring people together in a safe space to share their experiences, to connect, listen and support each other," she explains. "With help from the National Lottery we will be piloting an online group support model led by experienced Listening Volunteers to help Wrens feel more optimistic for their future, less lonely and more connected to those around them. "It is hoped that the group support model will be a welcome addition to our 1-2-1 Listening Support - enabling us to reach many more people and and build community. The Wren Project is excited to announce we will be piloting our listening space in a group format, specifically for men living with lupus, together with our charity partner, LUPUS UK. Speaking about the pilot WrenGroup scheme - the first for our charity which offers one-to-one listening support for all autoimmune diseases as our key service - Kate Middleton, CEO of the Wren Project, said: “Our decision to pilot a group scheme, initially for men living with the complexities of lupus, shows our commitment to finding new and innovative ways to give people space, time and support to talk about the true impact their diagnoses have had on their lives. “Our hope is that, in the private support of a small group environment, we can enable individuals to feel heard and validated in their experiences among peers with a shared understanding.” Read more here: https://lnkd.in/gtsbKZqS
