Photonics is a cornerstone of long-distance data communications, providing unmatched speed, large bandwidth, and low energy consumption. Integrated photonics uses semiconductor processes to miniaturize and mass-manufacture photonic devices with high precision at scale. While the challenge in microelectronics is to lay out billions of transistors on a microchip, integrated photonics typically involves only thousands of components. But unlike transistors, they’re not all the same. Today, designing photonic components is a manual and arduous process that requires great effort from photonic engineers. Wave Photonics has automated the process of designing photonic components and built a large library of photonic components that accounts for many different parameters and the tolerances of different foundries. Founded by James Lee, Matthew A., and Mateusz Kubica in 2021, it recently raised a €5.3M Seed round from UK Innovation & Science Seed Fund and Cambridge Enterprise Ventures, joined by Redstone QAI Quantum Fund, Kyra Ventures, Parkwalk Advisors’s University of Cambridge Enterprise Fund IX, and Deeptech Labs. Matthew A., Friederike Jöhlinger and Jiangbo Zhu led a training session on GDSFactory to representatives of companies adopting or exploring integrated photonics as part of the PIC Bootcamp Practitioner programme at the University of Bristol. The GDSFactory training session was a way to demonstrate the power and flexibility of a Python-based approach to PIC layout. PIC Bootcamp was organised and delivered by Anchored In Ltd., Bay Photonics, CORNERSTONE, University of Bristol and Wave Photonics. Anyone interested can access the training materials we presented here: https://lnkd.in/eVdFYYCS

Great to see this article in Startups Magazine about the initiative our UK-APAC Tech Growth Programme team just delivered for five British companies in the #quantumcomputing field. The UK delegation went to Quantum Korea 2024, where we arranged 35 meetings with #SouthKorean corporations to kick start commercial discussions. The UK companies were Wave Photonics (James Lee), Quantum Software Lab (Craig Skeldon), Cavero Quantum (James Trenholme), Element Six (Matthew Markham) and Oxford Instruments plc (Gayeon Jung), whose innovations attracted huge interest from the Korean corporations. If you'd like to be considered for initiatives such as this to help your business expand in Asia Pacific, you can find out more about the UK-APAC Tech Growth Programme and apply to join here: https://lnkd.in/ec6XcAwK https://lnkd.in/gaSwygEM
