"We must lead by example." Honouring the £11.6bn climate finance pledge is the obvious first step in reclaiming Britain's global leadership on climate change — failing to do so would be an inhumane and nonsensical misfire from the Labour party. Investing in reliable water must be at the heart of this commitment. No one can adapt to a world without water. It's the single biggest impact of climate change, with communities experiencing a whiplash of intensifying drought and extreme flooding — and it’s only going to get worse. The pledge should be seen as the floor, not the ceiling — the government needs to increase investment in climate adaptation globally to ensure the millions of people around the world who are footing the bill for a crisis they have done the least to cause, are supported. What's gender got to do with water? 💦 Well, in the majority of homes that don't have clean water, it's women and girls who are responsible for collecting water. This can often take hours every day, as water is usually far from home. This burden means that there often isn't time for school or work, which holds back women from achieving their potential. When there's no clean water near home, at work or at school, it also makes managing periods difficult - leading to many girls missing school or women unable to work. Together, we can make sure no one is held back by a lack of clean water ✊

Sanitation workers like Kona are the unsung heroes of keeping our surroundings clean and protecting our health. This week, the UK's International Development Minister, Anneliese Dodds, made two exciting announcements: 1. Britain will restore overseas development spending to 0.7% of economic output when fiscal circumstances allow. 2. The UK will join the Brazilian President’s Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty. We applaud these moves, but we know there's no world free from poverty on a liveable planet without water – as our UK CEO Tim Wainwright has witnessed this week in Madagascar. That's why we're calling on the UK government to lead the world on global water security and place water, sanitation and hygiene at the very heart of the UK’s international development policy. #UKaid #InternationalDevelopment
