"We know that we’ll only grow as a business by listening to what our customers want, not telling them what they want. […] True inclusion and accessibility come from understanding, awareness, and active engagement with the disability community." As part of National Disability Employment Awareness Month, (#NDEAM) we spoke to US-based Valuable 500 company BraunAbility. In our latest piece, Megan Wegner, BraunAbility’s Associate Director of Brand, Communications, and DEI, highlights the company's focus on inclusivity and employability. The company actively involves people with mobility difficulties in product development and within the organisation. BraunAbility advocates for broader accessibility through initiatives like "Save Our Spots," which tackles the misuse of accessible parking spaces, and "The Driving Force," an online community helping shape the company’s initiatives. Their "Drive for Inclusion Report" highlights disparities in how people with disabilities are perceived and accommodated in the workplace. In our latest episode of This Is The North, we tackle an issue that’s more than just a business strategy—it’s about rewriting the rules of inclusion. I had the privilege of speaking with Katy Talikowska, CEO of The Valuable 500, who is leading a global movement that’s transforming disability inclusion from a tick-box exercise into a genuine boardroom priority. This isn’t just about policies or initiatives—it’s about creating a culture where 23 million employees across 500 of the world’s most influential companies (Apple, Google, Microsoft, and more) feel truly included and represented. Katy and I dove deep into the challenges businesses face in moving from lip service to real, systemic change. We covered everything from the power of authentic representation, to leadership accountability, to the upcoming SYNC 25 Summit in Tokyo—a game-changing event tracking progress in disability inclusion on a global scale. Here’s the hard truth: diversity without action is just a word. Inclusion is the result of sustained, intentional work—and Katy’s message is clear. If you want real progress, you have to move beyond surface-level efforts and embed inclusion into the DNA of your business. This is an episode you can’t afford to miss if you’re serious about driving change. 🎧 Link to the full conversation in the comments below. #DisabilityInclusion #Leadership #PurposeDriven #TheValuable500 #ThisIsTheNorth #InclusionMatters #SocietyMatters #PurposeMade #KatieTalikowska #Podcast

Another great initiative from Valuable 500 company Nationwide Building Society to make banking more accessible for customers. Their latest launch, the Speak Easy cards, are available in their branches and can also be downloaded on their website. These cards contain common banking phrases and pictures to support customers with communication difficulties or people who struggle with sensory overwhelm.
We're committed to making sure all of our customers can access our banking services, so we're rolling out Speak Easy cards to all 605 of our branches. Each card has a commonly used banking phrase or request with a picture to show what the card means, and can be used as an alternative to speaking.
