🚨 WATCH THE RECORDINGS OF FUTURE FABRICS EXPO 2024 SEMINAR SERIES: NOW ON YOUTUBE! 🚨 The FFE 2024 Seminar Series recordings can be watched now on YOUTUBE featuring industry pioneers, thought leaders and activists who are shaping a more responsible and sustainable fashion industry. These crucial conversations dive deep into the industry’s most pressing challenges and spotlight the innovative solutions advancing our industry. For example 'Clothes that Don’t Make Us Sick: Solutions to the Problem of Plastics' exposes the flaws in outdated production systems. As Patrick Grant of Community Clothing, panelist on it, phrases it: "The systems that were created and industrialized in the 50s, 60s, and 70s are really not fit for purpose." He calls for an urgent shift away from harmful practices designed for mass production rather than quality or longevity. Another seminar 'Reality Check: How to Make Circular Systems Succeed', panelist Georgia Parker of Fashion for Good discusses the transformative potential of NextGen fibers: "NextGen materials currently make up less than 1% of the total fiber basket, but by 2030, we anticipate they could account for up to 13%." Her insights highlight a future where responsible materials are supported by brand commitments and technological advancements. Bananatex®’s Hannes Schoenegger’s contribution on the panel 'Delivering True Circularity' reveals the hidden costs of cheap materials: "When you buy a polyester fabric for $2, then this is the price but not the cost. The cost will be paid by the next generation [who needs to be] getting microplastics out of the ocean or the bloodstream." He advocates for systemic changes, such as taxing virgin plastics and CO2 emissions, to drive responsible material choices. Our FFE seminars are essential viewing for anyone committed to transforming the fashion industry! From reimagining materiality to implementing genuine circular solutions, the FFE 2024 Seminar Series provides the insights and inspiration needed to make a lasting impact. In the space of Textile Innovation knowledge is constantly evolving and focus on different innovations can be shifting accordingly. As a start-up being resilient and flexible is key, but what the Next-Gen players need the most in order to survive and thrive is collaboration 🤲. Future Fabrics Expo organized by The Sustainable Angle creates this collaborative space, connecting and promoting innovators and suppliers of sustainable materials with fashion brands. The materials showcased at the Future Fabrics Expo are all curated to pass eco-standards and accompanied by educational background information, as well as seminars and workshops. We were happy to be part of it over a month ago, together with our Next-Gen partner Circ®, innovator in textile-to-textile recycling. For the ones who could not make it, here's a peak. In the UK, 22 million pieces of furniture are discarded each year, the majority of which end up in landfill. Nearly 5 million mattresses meet the same fate, that's enough to fill Wembley Stadium twice over. When talking about sustainability in industry we often immediately think of fashion, but what about homes and interiors? Earlier this year Prof. Carole Collet joined fellow panelists Delyth Fetherston-Dilke (Delyth Upholstery), Simone Suss (STUDIO SUSS ), Julian Ellis-Brown (Ponda) and moderator Helen Gordon (Nested Living Ltd) at The Sustainable Angle's Future Fabrics Expo to discuss advancing sustainability in the home textiles and interior design industries. This was one of my favorite panels ever! At The Sustainable Angle's #futurefabricexpo in June. We discussed Next Gen materials and supply chains, hitting on important topics related to: * Performance standards - Are they over-engineered? Do we need to re-examine them? How can we use innovation to add non-traditional performance benefits? * Implementation - What are the trade offs between drop in solutions vs. innovating on processes to modernize current production and benefit from better efficiencies, lower costs, and less impact? * How can we help garner more support for Next Gen innovators through regulation and investment opportunities? Can we create an alliance of stakeholders across the value chain to come together and put forward a position paper / manifesto for legislators? Lots of incredible insights from a very talented panel including Maria Intscher-Owrang of Simplifyber, Mira N. from Biophilica, Victoria M. from Nanoloom and Dali Naeb from Vivo Barefoot. Check it out below. #nextgen #sustainablefashion #sustainableinnovation #thisisthefuture
Simplifyber CEO Maria Intscher-Owrang participated in a fascinating panel discussion on the future of materials and manufacturing for soft goods, moderated by the fabulous Christine Goulay https: //loom.ly/XgeMtUA Thanks so much to The Sustainable Angle for organizing!
