The parents of a nine-year-old girl who was caught in the crossfire of a botched gangland shooting at a restaurant have said their daughter may never “speak or move properly” again. The mother and father said their daughter had only gone to the restaurant in east London because she wanted “ice cream”. The schoolgirl, whose identity has not been revealed, was eating dinner with her family at Evin, a Turkish restaurant in Kingsland High Street, Dalston, on May 29 when a lone motorcyclist fired “a number of shots” towards the building

Conservative Party donations fell by 90% between the 2019 and 2024 elections, due to an exodus of the super-rich donors who bankrolled Boris Johnson’s campaign. Analysis of figures from the Electoral Commission shows that the Tories received only £1.8m in the six-week election campaign, down from £19.4min 2019 and the lowest in any Tory election campaign since 2001. Donations to Labour, meanwhile, increased from £5.4m to £9.5m, despite the fact that the money it received from unions halved

In Guernsey the King awarded royal status to a rare breed of goats that had been hidden from the Nazis in the Second World War. Local woman Miriam Milbourne rediscovered the goats, now known as royal golden Guernsey goats, on the island’s scrubland and moved them inside to prevent them from being slaughtered during Germany’s occupation of the island. There are believed to be only 1,350 of the animals left in the world but, wherever they are, they will have royal status

Sir Keir Starmer’s chief of staff has been accused of “subverting” cabinet ministers in an effort to secure a government bailout of up to £310m to rebuild a derelict stadium in Belfast. Sue Gray has angered government officials and ministers by “personally dominating” negotiations for a bailout for Casement Park, a dilapidated Gaelic games venue due to host matches at the 2028 European football championship. Gray’s close interest in the project, which is politically contentious in Northern Ireland, has caused resentment among Labour ministers who have been told there is no money for new spending commitments

Labour ministers say they are planning to toughen online safety laws after campaigners and parents accused Ofcom of being too soft on technology companies. Peter Kyle, the science and technology secretary, said the government was committed to “building on the Online Safety Act”, which is intended to force social media and search companies to make their platforms safer. Ofcom was criticised by 23 groups including the NSPCC, Barnardo’s, 5Rights Foundation, Molly Rose Foundation and the Internet Watch Foundation in a statement released today. They said the regulator was failing to fully implement the legislation
