With former U.S. President Donald Trump set to return to the White House, observers both within and outside of the country are waiting to see what he will do (or undo) in terms of climate policy. Afterall, as the world’s largest economy and a major emitter of greenhouse gases, the United States plays a major role in terms of climate negotiations and hitting global targets. This is something representatives at the COP29 summit, taking place in Baku, Azerbaijan this week, will be acutely aware of, as they come to the table to set new climate finance goals. If history is anything to go by, even domestically, U.S. investments into climate-friendly technologies were significantly lower under Trump than his successor and incumbent President Joe Biden. According to data compiled by the Clean Investment Monitor, investments into emissions-reducing tech are estimated to have reached around $15.4 billion in the first quarter of 2018, in contrast to the Biden administration’s high of $76.3 billion in the second quarter of 2024. This data includes investments in the manufacturing, energy, industry and retail sectors. Since data is only available on this dashboard from 2018 onwards, Trump's first year in office could not be shown. Biden took office with the vision of a “clean” energy future, aiming to reduce the country’s greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050. In order to strengthen the U.S. as a hub for green industry, the Biden administration drew up sustainability guidelines for the awarding of public contracts, including the Federal Sustainability Plan. However, as the Federal Agency for Civic Education notes, while Biden's policy was designed to reduce domestic emissions of fossil fuels, it was not to restrict their extraction and use. Fossil fuels therefore continue to be a central part of U.S. energy policy. It remains to be seen what will follow in the coming four years. During Trump’s first term in office, he not only placed a clear focus on the promotion of fossil fuels but withdrew from the Paris Agreement and rolled back a number of environmental rules. In his most recent election campaign, Trump also said that he wants to undo many of Biden’s policies.

According to OECD - OCDE data, South Korea has the most work to do in order to close the gender wage gap. A male worker in South Korea out-earned his female counterparts by 29.3 percent in 2023. The problem is also highly evident in other Asian countries, for example Japan. In 2023, the wage gap between the sexes was 22.0 percent there. Even though things are slightly better in North America, the U.S. still has a wage gap of around 16 percent. Limited data was reported for 2023, however in 2022 the OECD average for the year stood at around 11 percent - a large gap caused by women working in lower-paid or part-time positions more often, but also by women earning less than men with comparable jobs. Among highly developed countries, New Zealand had one of the smaller gender wage gaps at just 4.2 percent. Conversely, small gender pay gaps or even negative pay gaps can also hint at an economy in crisis where competitive and higher-paid positions typically occupied by men have vanished. Women tend to occupy positions in low-prestige, but stabler parts of the economy, for example education, child and elder care or public administration. Men's employment can take further hits when jobs in manufacturing or related fields disappear due to economic trouble, leading to women out-earning men in some instances.

According to the website Climate Watch, 100 nations have pledged to reach carbon neutrality by a certain year - that is almost exactly half of the world's countries. The climate conference COP29 that kicks off today in Baku, Azerbaijan, might now give countries the opportunity to publish new goals or update existing ones. Besides sharing and updating climate goals, the conference will also be about climate finance. A major objective is to increase contributions to climate change mitigation, typically paid by richer countries to poorer ones. Leading the road to net zero among bigger nations is Finland, which aims to become carbon neutral by 2035. In Europe, Iceland is also looking to reach net zero early, by 2040, while Germany and Sweden are pushing the date for carbon neutrality to 2045. Outside of Europe, those pledging early carbon neutrality include Mauritania (2030) and Nepal (2045). Many of the countries with climate pledges have put down 2050 as their goal. However, many in Asia are aiming for 2060, for example China, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia and Russia. India, responsible for seven percent of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide, is even further behind, having set 2070 as its target. These later dates might prove detrimental to the fight against climate change as China, India and Russia are among the five top emitters of CO₂ in the world together with the United States and the European Union. The tracker identifies six countries that have already achieved net zero and have officially pledged to remain carbon neutral. Among them are many smaller states and island nations, with their successes partially attributable to the relatively undeveloped nature of some of those places as well as in some cases dense forest cover, which makes up large parts of Guyana, for example.

Despite inflation cooling off significantly in recent months, prices for many everyday products remain significantly higher than the were two or three years ago. In light of higher price levels, buying second-hand products is often a viable option to save some money without making too many sacrifices. Whether it’s clothes, electronic devices or household goods, online platforms have made selling and buying used goods a lot easier in recent years. But despite Macklemore’s 2012 smash hit “Thrift Shop” celebrating the hunt for used clothes with only “20 dollars in your pocket”, Statista Consumer Insights data suggests that buying second-hand is not too common among Americans. According to a survey of 10,000 U.S. adults, clothing and shoes are first choice when it comes to second-hand shopping, but with just 30 and 19 percent of respondents claiming to have made a second-hand purchase of clothing or shoes, respectively, in the past twelve months, it's hardly fashionable to go "thrifting". The share of respondents buying second-hand is even lower for other categories, with just 12 percent saying they bought used consumer electronics in the past 12 months, which is surprising given the size of the secondary market for smartphones for example. 41 percent of respondents said they hadn't bought anything second-hand in the past twelve months.

Among the capital cities of 134 countries and regions analyzed in the 2023 World Air Quality Report published by air purification equipment manufacturer IQAir, New Delhi ranked first with an average annual PM2.5 concentration of 92.7 micrograms per cubic meter of air. This number exceeds the most recent World Health Organization goal 17 times, and only one other capital city comes close in IQAir's ranking. Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, exhibited an annual average PM2.5 concentration of 80.2 micrograms per cubic meter of air, followed by Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso), Dushanbe (Tajikistan) and Baghdad (Iraq) with 46.6, 46.0 and 45.8 micrograms, respectively. The first capital city not located in Asia or Africa on the list is Sarajevo with 28.6 micrograms. IQAir's World Air Quality Report analyzed data from 7,812 air quality monitor stations and sensors, adding seven new African and four new Latin American countries to its covered area compared to its 2022 edition. The biggest share of PM2.5, which stands for ambient particular matter with a diameter of less than 2.5 microns, stems from human activity, according to a 2021 paper published in nature communications. Emissions from road transport and the energy sector are the biggest contributors to a higher concentration of PM2.5, while smaller-scale sources like agricultural waste burning can also be a factor, especially in so-called developing countries.
