CACHE 23 ‘On a small island in the middle of Hanbury River we dumped 10,000 feet of unused motion picture film, and a £1000 movie camera. Klyuchevskaya is considered sacred by some indigenous peoples, being viewed by them as the location of the world’s creation. Located almost on the International Date Line, Kamchatka is one of the first places to see the sunrise every day. It is said that when the god Volkov created the world, this was the point at which he held it, and so it remains unfinished, unsealed – hence the volcanic activity. KOAN I remember the term koan – a sort of Bhuddist riddle – which begs the student to find a point to something. Did Jenny have to take her bike up this high? I imagine a monk in the monastery we just passed asking his disciples. If she had just stayed in the valley, would she still have found meaning in her adventure? I shake my head and try to stay present. I can see the prayer flags fluttering at the la, the pass. The bright strings flapping fiercely in the ripping wind are a mark of hope. If we can just get to those flags, we can surely speed our bikes down to a lower altitude where there will be more oxygen. EMBRACING THE SILENCE The boat is at anchor. Clouds of mosquitoes dance on the calm water. This must be one of the most peaceful places I have ever seen, but I soon realise that my expectations of this trip will be very different to the reality. LETTING GO Because it’s not an adventure until things go wrong. Once I let go of my need to be in control, I found that I was pushed to be more creative in extreme conditions. And nature will do its own thing anyway. All we can do is be adaptable and enjoy the ride. The sheer magic of it all, the breathtaking richness, made me appreciate the value of just going with the flow and getting creative with whatever comes next.
