Our Digital Innovation bursary scholars have been getting stuck into the cutting edge of tech on this year’s Summer Tour. The 10 day fully funded tour takes DI scholars to TV studios and production companies across the UK and Scotland, gaining insight at the likes of the BBC, Sky, Paramount, Channel 4, STV Group plc, Arqiva and Everyone TV | Freely, Freeview, Freesat. Applications for the 2025 RTS bursary schemes close one week from today. If you or someone you know is from a lower-income background with ambitions of entering the TV industry, we want to hear about it.   With two core schemes – the TV Production and Journalism Bursary and Digital Innovation Bursary – there’s something for everyone. So far, the schemes have supported over 370 students, with 82% of graduates going on to find work in TV and related industries.   Successful applicants will receive financial support from £1,500 per academic year, a personal industry mentor, RTS membership and free access to RTS events.   The schemes are open to all those studying an undergraduate degree or HND Level 5 or 6, with at least two years left of study. Congratulations to Tia Shenton, who has been named the 2025 RTS Young Technologist of the Year!   Now a Broadcast Engineer at Techex, Tia began her career as a Degree Apprentice at Channel 4 and has played an instrumental role in a number of key achievements for the broadcaster. This includes creating and supporting a simulcast stream of the UK General Election that reached over 750,000 viewers, and conducting research into UHD HDR for streaming services.   Tia was selected by a panel of expert industry judges, chaired by Digital Media Consultant Terry Marsh. As the winner of the 2025 Award, she will receive an all-expenses paid trip to IBC 2025.   Tia said: "As somebody who grew up in the creative world of production, I was familiar with the RTS and the amazing work and support it offers the community. It is that fact which makes me even more proud in my personal career journey to have been awarded a technology focused award from the organisation. I want to thank my amazing team at Channel 4 who pushed me throughout my degree apprenticeship and nurtured my nature to be curious and eager. And I hope that within my new role at Techex I will be able to grow more and be apart of the industry push into the future."   Congratulations also to our runner-up and winner of the Coffey Award for Excellence in Technology 2025, Sean Jones. Sean is a Broadcast Engineer Apprentice at Channel 4, having begun his apprenticeship in 2022 with a focus on audio, which culminated in a graduate project where Sean led research into dialogue intelligibility, using viewer feedback to identify key issues. The Young Technologist Award was established by the RTS with funds received from the family of distinguished broadcast engineer A.M. Beresford-Cooke. Last night an esteemed panel delved into the future of BBC funding for a timely RTS session. Many thanks to our panellists Lord Anthony Hall, Mike Darcey, Dame Caroline Dinenage MP DBE and Mark Oliver, and to our chair Jake Kanter for asking such probing questions.   Mark Oliver set up the debate with some fascinating research, before our panel gave us much to chew on as they weighed up the arguments for reform or replacement of the licence fee.
