Ghanian women are faced with a stark dilemma when it comes to their migration. On social media, they are torn between different representations of migration to the Gulf states: migration is either idealised as a highly profitable activity or one laden with risks of abuse and harassment. Eyram Ivy Sedzro explores how, in making their decisions of whether to stay or whether to migrate, women balance these contrasting representations. About us
Routed is an online publication founded in the autumn of 2018 by a group of Oxford graduates, brought together by a shared interest in migration and (im)mobility. Bridging the divide between specialist academic literature on human mobility and popular portrayals of migration in the media, we hope to bring a fresh, critical perspective to the study of how and why people move. Challenging perceptions of migration as a binary choice between roots and routes, our work aims to lift up the voices of people ‘on the move’ and to explore human (im)mobility in its many varied forms.

Using collaborative artistic methodologies, Jessica Sullivan examines the poverty conditions in which refugees are forced to live, exploitative black-market, and constant threat of arrest and deportation, all of which negatively impact refugees’ feelings of belonging in Amman. Yet refugees are resilient and persevere, finding creative ways to provide for their families, build belonging, and improve their communities and themselves.
