It was a great session yesterday at #ONSHOREWIND24 covering all things CfD and market reform. With AR6 results announced on Tuesday morning, there was a lot to discuss. Key takeaways for me were: ⚡️The CfD provides a crucial route to market for onshore wind and will be the driving force behind deploying the capacity required to reach 2030 targets. However, AR7, AR8 and AR9 will have to deliver far more capacity than AR6 if these targets are to be met. ⚡️In terms of reforming the CfD, there are several quick wins the UK Government could implement to enable accelerated deployment including longer contracts, more flexibility over delivery years and capacity targets for each auction. A budgetary minimum for onshore wind could also play a key role in ensuring more capacity is brought forward in future allocation rounds. ⚡️ With reforms which would jeopardise onshore wind deployment still on the table, the UK Government must urgently provide clarity on major REMA policy decisions. It is also unclear how an increased role for strategic planning should interact with market reform - much more thinking to be done in this area! Thanks to all our panellists for an insightful discussion. Suzanne Clifton Paul Moran Kate Dooley Simon Gill Scottish Renewables RenewableUK
Next at our Onshore Wind Conference, co-organised with RenewableUK, we delved into the financial landscape of the sector with Suzanne Clifton, Onshore Wind Principal Investments Manager, EDF Renewables UK & Ireland; Paul Moran, Mergers and Acquisitions Manager, ESB; Kate Dooley, Policy and Regulatory Affairs Manager, RES and Simon Gill, Energy Systems Consultant, The Energy Landscape. The panel discussed the wins from the Contracts for Difference (CfD) results announced yesterday by the UK Government, while analysing what needs to happen to the mechanism, pot sizes and electricity market to support mass deployment and a sustainable net-zero energy system. Strategic planning that embraces a holistic view of the diverse elements that will constitute our future energy system was a central theme of the conversation as our panellists looked at the past, present and future financing of onshore wind. I love my job, but some weeks are a wee bit more special than others. On Tuesday we welcomed the result of the AR6 CFD auction where we were awarded contracts that will enable us to develop over 1GW of clean, green energy from new offshore wind projects off the coast of East Anglia. On Wednesday I was privileged to join the RenewableUK strategy, with colleagues across the industry, as we map out how best to support our collective goals to decarbonise, and do it faster! On the Wednesday evening we came together across ScottishPower Renewables, both in Glasgow and London, to recognise the amazing work done by many to be awarded the CFD Contracts. And to also celebrate the great work being done across our onshore projects. And to cap it off, yesterday I was delighted to attend the ScottishPower / Cancer Research UK (CRUK) fundraising golf day. I will keep the comment to the fundraising aspects 😉. The team, supported by many amazing contracting partners, raised over £125,000 during the dinner auction alone! Great work for an organisation that helps us fight a disease that impacts so many of us. And behind the scenes the day job continues. I go into the weekend smiling, and wish everyone a great one!
