Yesterday morning, Blessing Lobho and Yvonne Luu visited the Bronze Woman statue in Stockwell, the first public monument of a Black woman in England. As we celebrate Black History Month, this is an important milestone to reflect on. Based on a poem by Cécile Nobrega, the statue was built to honour the Afro-Caribbean community on the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade. Blessing and Yvonne had the privilege of spending time with the fantastic team at OLMEC and engaging with community members to discuss the importance of amplifying Black voices, especially those of Black women. Blessing reflected: "I think this statue is crucial because young Black women face a variety of challenges, and it's important to keep celebrating things that empower them." What does climate justice mean? Our very own Kenza Essalama and Karen Larbi recently took to the stage at the #BCorpFestivalUK in Oxford to deliver a powerful talk on climate justice and its strategic relevance to businesses. All three of their sessions sold out and it was fantastic to see so many business leaders engaging with this challenging but essential piece of the climate puzzle. Simply put, climate justice recognises the fact that the people and countries who are the least responsible for climate change are the ones who are suffering its worst impacts today. As Kenza and Karen explained, the operational risks of not addressing climate justice in your corporate strategy are critical - from exposing yourself to supply chain disruptions to harming your talent pipeline, you can't afford to ignore climate justice. If you're not sure where to start when it comes to climate justice and your business, our Climate Counsel service is the place to go. Are big food companies taking planetary health seriously enough? Yesterday evening, our interns Blessing Lobho and Destiny Hollern joined Bite Back at their fantastic event exploring the role that food corporations play in the climate crisis. Bite Back's latest data reveals that 10 food and drink firms are producing more carbon emissions globally than the entire aviation industry. Yesterday's event highlighted this staggering fact and served up a menu of key actions governments and businesses must take to put human and planetary health first. Snap view on Harris v Trump Debate This debate was as high stakes as they come...and it was a fascinating watch. In the world of debating, three broad areas are usually used to assess who has won a debate—strategy, content and speaking style. My view, as someone who prepares CEOs, politicians and activists for such moments, is that Harris won the debate clearly tonight. Here's why. ▶ Strategy Harris entered the debate with a clear two-pronged strategy: 1) to present herself as a candidate ready for office and 2) to destabilise Trump. She achieved both. The Vice President was likely to succeed in explaining what she would do in clear, pragmatic terms. She was incredibly well prepared. The real strategic skill was laying so many effective traps for Trump. Harris managed to goad Trump on his links to Project 2025, crowd sizes, his legal troubles and his mental capacity. Trump took the bait, often meaning he spent less time landing policy blows regarding immigration or crime. Harris clearly got under his skin, preventing him from executing his own strategy, which was to not come across as a bully. ▶ Content Harris's central messages came across clearly and consistently throughout the debate: "Let's turn a page" and "I'm on your side—he's not." These themes underpinned responses, positioning herself as an advocate for the average citizen while portraying Trump as out of touch with their needs. The Vice President effectively used statistics and data to support her arguments, striking a careful balance between factual information and emotional appeal (a much better balance than Biden managed to strike in 2020, for example). However, on the economy Trump was probably marginally better at connecting macroeconomic points to the ordinary lives of Americans. ▶ Speaking Style Trump, true to form, was light on details. While this lack of specificity is not new for the former president, he usually compensates with charm and charisma. That charisma was lacking because of the pressure the Vice President put Trump under from the start. As the debate progressed, Trump became more angry, loud and frustrated. There was no departure from that speaking style. On the other hand, Harris demonstrated a more varied approach to speaking. At times being very Conversationalist, at times even laughing. At other times, speaking forcefully like a Firebrand. In her closing pitch, she deployed a more Stateperson speaking personality. Kamala had a clear plan and executed it well. Trump scrambled and lost all of the main strategic battles in the debate. He was erratic, easily distracted and lost the charm that has carried him through so many debates. The lesson for leaders is when engaging in town halls, panels, speeches or debates: 🗣 Have a strategy 🗣 Prepare 🗣 Don't be sidetracked Let's see what impact this debate has on the voters.
