1 cold email changed my entire life. Fifteen years ago, I could barely speak English (see the email below, no Grammarly back then either!). I was making $60 a month in India with an internship. My dad's business had just gone bust, and I had to support the family, including three older sisters. The only thing I could do was to prospect for work as an engineer. I sent a lot of emails to over 500 companies. 99% of them did not respond, and the ones that did only scolded me to stop emailing them. But one person responded positively—that's Rohit Shankar. After a full day of interviewing on Saturday, I started on Monday. Offered $180 a month. I was the happiest person on earth seeing that big bump. I worked my ass off, nearly 18 hours a day. Rohit not only gave me a job but also a wonderful career. A few years later, Dimdim got acquired by Salesforce. I ended up moving to San Francisco in 2014. The monthly salary was much higher! With SF prices, though, I felt I earned more in India. ;) Fast forward 10+ years, I co-founded OneShot.ai, and we're hitting a few million dollars in ARR through the same hardcore prospecting. My point is, don’t let a few no's get in the way of your destiny. I was going to stop emailing that day when Rohit responded too. I feel the same struggle while building my startup. I also know the more painful it is, the closer the big win is getting.

    This is how it’s done.

Whats it like closing a $8.7m deal. Its good, but seeing the SDR you hired 10 years ago close it was even better. Whats it like hiring an A player and seeing them become the best in the company. Its good, but hiring them 5x at 5 different companies and doing it every time was even better. The best sales people just do it different: They learn of others like crazy They are harder on themselves than anyone else They are incredibly disciplined They love prospecting They leave no stone unturned on any deal They build genuine relationships with their customers They know how and when to utilise the wider team They have the reputation of being the best They master high stress situations and thrive They NEVER stop They want to be Number 1 This picture with Jon Hodgson was taken after we closed that $8.7m deal, after 11 years and 5 companies together. Jon has gone from SDR > AE > Enterprise AE > Sales Director > RVP of now one of the fastest growing companies in the world. Its not about turning up one day, or end of month or quarter, its every single day. Also, Gun-show optional

“System of inference” is coming and nobody is talking about it, but what is it? SaaS products falls into 3 categories: 1. System of Data 2. System of Engagement 3. System of Intelligence Inference should be under intelligence, but it’s not, they don’t go deep enough, they are stuck with: Building data pipelines ETL tools Cleaning Analytics and Insights They spend low to no time on any deep machine learning models. This is where The System of Inference is coming. Imagine you have a model that is constantly re-trained on all data: internal and external data > Infer and derive real business action > Autonomously carry out that work > A/B test all of that work > Then keeps going over and over again > The results keep getting better I’ve been building products for the last 15 years and this is what excites me the most. We at OneShot.ai are building the future of AI GTM, we are taking huge quantities of data, using world class automation and then training our models on how to optimize. The future of SaaS is system of inference. The future of AI GTM is going to be OneShot.ai.

I’ve been an engineer for the last 14 years, over 10 years at Salesforce, over the last 2 years I’ve had to learn how to sell OneShot.ai and here’s the honest truth. I honestly thought sales was easy, your basically selling the product engineers work 18 hours a day on. I thought sales people were overpaid, commission cheques of over $500k for just meeting people and showing the product. Over the last 2 years I’ve learnt I couldn’t have been more WRONG. Sales is one of the most mentally draining and challenging jobs out there. The constant rejection, then the next day put a smile on your face and go again. Sales is highly competitive, not only with your actual competition but with yourself and team too. Sales people get fired for performance, engineers rarely do. Understanding the complexities of how companies make decisions, the amount of people involved, the levels of justification. Pipeline doesn’t magically appear, outside of deals I’m stressing over a weak pipeline. Prospecting is very f**king hard, finding leads, researching, emails, no responses. Cold calling is the worst job in the world!! You’re basically interrupting people during their day, being hung up on is not a nice feeling. The product sales sell isn’t always the best, there are bugs, sales get the blame for that if the deal doesn’t close. Sometimes you can do everything right and still lose the deal. To the sales family keep going, you deserve that commission, you are the lifeblood of ALL companies, and most importantly remember to protect your mental health.
