Chancellor Rachel Reeves just rolled out Labour's first budget in 14 years, with positive news for EV incentives! So, what does this mean for EV salary sacrifice? 🔋 EV Support Continues: the government remains committed to promoting EVs, keeping salary sacrifice tax incentives and a low Benefit in Kind (BiK) rate on EVs. ⚡ BiK Rate Update: although BiK for EVs will gradually rise from 1% year-on-year, it will cap at 9% by 2029—still far below rates for petrol, diesel, and hybrids. 🚙 Lower Road Tax: From April 2025, road tax for new EVs will stay low (£10 for the first year), making EVs even more wallet-friendly compared to hybrids or ICE cars. This budget is a win for EVs, with incentives tax savings available through EV salary sacrifice not going anywhere. Over the summer, we started exploring new ways to offer employees benefits that align with our sustainability mission. Today, we’re partnering with Octopus Electric Vehicles to trial their EV salary sacrifice scheme. Why? Because offering benefits that reflect how much we value our team is CRUCIAL as we scale Compare Ethics (we’re experiencing some pretty epic growth right now 🚀). And we know sustainability matters to employees: a recent Deloitte study showed that 69% of employees want their companies to invest in sustainability, and 27% said they’d consider a potential employer’s stance on sustainability before even accepting a job. That especially the case for a company like ours, where it’s so central to our whole mission. I’m hoping that this scheme can both support the team’s needs but also helps reduce our environmental impact. I’m a big fan of Octopus Electric Vehicles’ full-package-approach: car, charger, and energy. It makes switching to electric SO much easier for busy teams like ours. Driverless taxis? Wireless road charging? An EV battery that charges in 15 minutes? . . . 🤖 Companies like Nyobolt, Electreon, Waymo and Tesla are making headlines right now for the innovations they are bringing to the electric vehicles market. But are we ready? I posted last week about electric vehicles in collab with Octopus Electric Vehicles and the only thing that was a slight concern was the number of charging stations and the thought of running out of juice. As of July 2024 there were 83k+ charge points in 31k+ locations in the UK 🔋 This is a massive 32% increase in 2024 alone! Plus, if you sign up through Octopus Electric Vehicles, you can get one installed at home for free (worth £899) OR you get £600 credit on the Octopus Electroverse public charging network ⚡️ Say we add 32% more chargers for the next 10 years, we will have 1,332,960 points (I know we won't continue this rate of development, but fun to work out) For context, we have 8,353 petrol stations in the UK, so we would have 160X chargers vs petrol stations 🚗 Oh and the average range of an EV will get you about 300 miles . . . . and using a Tesla supercharger you can charge up to 200 miles in 15 minutes; time to grab a cuppa. Given that the average journey is well under 25 miles, most people will only need to charge once per week 👊 Additionally: 14 million new electric cars were registered globally in 2023. This brings the total number on the roads to 40 million. This is a 35% increase year on year and 6 times higher than in 2018. Electric cars accounted for around 18% of all cars sold in 2023, up from 14% in 2022 and only 2% 5 years earlier, in 2018. So, what do you think? Would you get one?
