HOLTEC CONSIDERS UK SITES FOR SMR MANUFACTURING FACILITY Energy technology company Holtec International is evaluating potential locations for a £1.3 billion Small Modular Reactor (SMR) manufacturing facility in the UK. Kingmoor Park in Carlisle has been shortlisted alongside sites in South Yorkshire, Tees Valley, and the West Midlands. A delegation including Holtec Britain Director Gareth Thomas has visited Kingmoor Park to assess its suitability. The proposed facility could create approximately 3,600 construction jobs and up to 400 manufacturing positions, significantly boosting the local economy. Cumberland Council Leader Mark Fryer has emphasized that while Cumberland is known for its nuclear industry, the proposed site would not handle nuclear materials. The factory aims to produce between two and four reactors annually, valued at £1-2 billion each, for deployment across the UK, Europe, and the Middle East. Holtec's final decision on the site location is pending further assessment of the shortlisted bids. #NEI #nuclearpower #nuclearenergy #smr #advancedreactors

SELLAFIELD TO DEMOLISH CALDER HALL BLOWER HOUSES Sellafield has received approval from Cumberland Council to demolish the Calder Hall Blower Houses at its Seascale site. These eight buildings, constructed in the 1950s, were integral to the power generation process at Calder Hall until its closure in 2003. Planning documents highlighted the structures as a financial burden and potential hazard due to redundant equipment used to circulate coolant gas through the reactors. The demolition, expected to take 32 to 40 days, will involve up to six 20-tonne HGVs each day of the demolition to remove material. While most of the asbestos has been removed, an additional 25 tonnes of hazardous material will be cleared during the process, and any loose radiological contamination will be removed before work starts. Sellafield plans to retain the concrete foundations for potential future redevelopment. This project underscores Sellafield's ongoing efforts to optimize site safety and efficiency, aligning with broader decommissioning and environmental clean-up initiatives. #NEI #nuclearpower #nuclearenergy #nuclearsafety

PALISADES NPP SET TO RECOMMISSION BY AUGUST 2025 The Palisades Nuclear Power Plant, located in Covert Township, Michigan, is on track to become the first recommissioned nuclear facility in the United States, with a target restart date of August 2025, according to the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). Holtec International, which acquired the 800 MW plant in June 2022 shortly after its shutdown, is spearheading the recommissioning effort. The company has already made significant strides, including re-establishing the workforce, revitalizing training programs, and procuring necessary systems and components. The project, supported by a $1.5 billion federal loan, aims to upgrade the facility to produce baseload power until at least 2051. Additionally, Holtec plans to install two small modular reactor units at the site, potentially adding another 800 MW of generation capacity. #NEI #nuclearpower #nuclearenergy
