🔴 Fighting is approaching ever closer to Nasser hospital in Khan Younis, Gaza. Any escalation of violence would obstruct access for patients and medical staff, making it impossible to provide care. #CeasefireNOW

Independent. Neutral. Impartial.
About us
Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders is an international medical humanitarian aid organisation. We save peoples' lives in conflict zones, epidemics and natural disasters. Independence, neutrality and impartiality are at the core of everything we do. Our network of medics, logistical professionals and administrative staff spans more than 70 countries. Our medical teams carry out more than nine million patient consultations a year. Our activities run from vaccination campaigns to complex surgery in war zones. From building hospitals to recruiting local teams, our non-medical staff make sure our field projects run smoothly, no matter what happens. And in our 26 headquarter offices around the globe, we fundraise, communicate and advocate on behalf of our patients. All of our income in the UK comes from private donations. Eighty-nine percent goes to our medical projects. Only one percent is spent on administration and staff costs. The rest we reinvest in fundraising. Our independent funding means we can act rapidly; we don’t need to wait for governments or other institutions to send us funds. Following the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, we treated our first patients within minutes as we were already on the ground. We work to help people in the greatest need, wherever and whenever they need it. This will always be what motivates us.

Sudan is facing the biggest humanitarian crisis on Earth. And yet, no one is really talking about it. This needs to change. Learn more about what's happening in Sudan 👇 https://lnkd.in/eQwgubWc

💉 In Ingende, Equateur Province, Democratic Republic of Congo, we worked with the Ministry of Health to vaccinate children against measles. A person with measles can infect up to 90% of unvaccinated individuals nearby, so ensuring high vaccine coverage is crucial to prevent a surge in cases. Involving local communities in the response, especially indigenous people living in more remote areas, we vaccinated nearly 63,000 children aged six months to nine years, achieving 96.7% coverage 🙌 "No one should be left out when it comes to measles, as this risks the virus continuing to spread. Ensuring every community is aware of the disease and involved in its treatment and vaccination was our priority, and it paid off," said Dr. Thomas Holebanga, leader of the MSF intervention in Ingende.

🔴 Survivors of the war in Sudan Over 600,000 people have fled from Sudan to Chad since April 2023, with more people arriving every day. At the Adré border crossing point between Chad and Sudan, we vaccinate children, screen for malnutrition, and organise referrals for patients who need further care. These are photos of some of the survivors currently seeking refuge in eastern Chad. Read their stories 👇 https://lnkd.in/e_dAKx38 📸: Corentin Fohlen

⚠️Saudi hospital in El Fasher, Sudan, where MSF provides surgical support, has been hit by shelling once again - the tenth time a hospital has been attacked in the city since the fighting began 80 days ago. 25 people were injured in this attack and three were killed. Saudi is the main hospital for women, children and war wounded in El Fasher. Since 10 May, over 2,170 wounded have been treated at South hospital and subsequently at Saudi hospital and over 300 have died. The facility was damaged by the latest hit but is still functioning. Teams from MSF and the Ministry of Health had responded to the arrival of 52 wounded people at Saudi hospital on Saturday 27 July, including 11 women and one child; 11 of them died from their injuries. ✨ Reducing our plastic waste from single-use face masks ✨ Last year, our teams in Mozambique and Kyrgyzstan started a pilot project to replace single-use facemasks with washable, reusable facemasks - with great success! Not only were the reusable masks better for the environment without compromising the quality of care or safety of our patients and medical staff 🙌 but staff also generally preferred the washable masks to the disposable ones because they're more comfortable to wear! When the masks have reached the end of their lifespan, after 40 washes, the fabric can be sewn together and used for other, non-medical purposes 💚

Every 30 seconds, someone dies from disease caused by viral hepatitis. Thankfully, we have the tools to prevent these deaths - they just need to reach the people that need them most, at the right time. This #WorldHepatitisDay, Dr Ana Paula Cavalheiro, MSF chronic and infectious diseases specialist, shares some important facts about the condition.

Meet Maryam Muhammad 👋 she's a health promotion supervisor in Kebbi, northern Nigeria. Together with her team, she leads cooking classes for communities in Kebbi to help prevent and treat moderate malnutrition. “This kind of cooking demonstration is crucial because people understand that they can prevent their children from becoming acutely malnourished rather than bringing them to a facility to treat them," Maryam said. Using ingredients that are locally available, participants at the cooking demonstrations are taught how to make Tom Brown, a special flour blend which, when mixed with water, creates a nutritious porridge. Additional ingredients can be added, based on what is available and affordable, such as milk, meat, or moringa leaves. “Prevention will always be better than cure. MSF will not remain here forever, so sustainable approaches are needed to reduce severe malnutrition. And we know that the people we train today will pass the recipe to others,” Maryam explained.

TW: video contains graphic descriptions of injuries. "We are entirely overwhelmed. The intensive care unit should be 12 beds. It had 28 beds the last time I checked. The paediatric unit has two or three children in every single bed at the moment." Dr Javid Abdelmoneim, MSF project medical referent in Gaza, spoke to BBC News about the situation in Nasser Hospital, Khan Younis.

⭐ Improving access to healthcare for sex workers In Malawi, our teams are working with community-based organisations set up by sex workers to defend their sexual and reproductive rights. Trained sex workers, identified as 'peer educators' from within their communities, carry out health promotion activities, including about safe sex practices and contraception. They also provide basic legal aid, support to combat sexual violence, and are involved in the prevention of sexually transmitted infections. Every other week, a small MSF team visits the communities to provide more in-depth medical support.
