Tourette's syndrome is an inherited neurological condition that affects around 1% of people causing them to make involuntary sounds and movements called tics. While there is no cure for Tourettes, we have worked with our long-standing partners at Neupulse as they take a significant step towards supporting individuals with Tourettes Syndrome with their wrist-worn wearable device which stimulates the median nerve. The field of robotics is developing rapidly, and with it the need to consider the ethical implications. Last week our Senior Human Factors Consultant, Molly Smyth, attended the British Standards Institution (BSI) 'Robotics: Ethical design' conference. The event explored what ethical issues we can expect to face when robots and robotic systems appear more commonly in the patient carer system - and what we can expect to see detailed in new BS 8611 guidance which covers this area. Many complex ethical questions were asked, including: * What clinical information do robots and robotic devices need in order to be able to adapt their treatment plans, and how should changes be verified? * Should the robot or robotic device do everything to support a given patient or should the patient be encouraged to help themselves? * Does the robot embodiment prompt an emotional response - and is this fair? This standard is expected to be released in 18-24 months time. In the meantime, we will continue to monitor how anticipated advances in robot and robotic device design impact our healthcare system.
