We are delighted to showcase the achievements of the Automated Tunnel Robotic Installation System (ATRIS) project. This project was the result of efforts by a consortium consisting of project leads, Tunnel Engineering Services (UK) Ltd, Costain Group PLC, MTC - Manufacturing Technology Centre, VVB Engineering, and ourselves. It was part-funded by Innovate UK as part of the Smart Programme. With the data and documentation provided by the project collaboration, it has been determined that a highly deployable vision system can be used as part of a control architecture to facilitate the robotic installation of services for UK tunnel construction. The application of robotics to automated installation of tunnel mechanical, electrical and communications systems is a first of a kind for UK industry. The system has multiple wider applications in a range of industries, including nuclear decommissioning. Video credit: Costain PLC.

Intelligent Robotics - transforming the Foundation Industries. In 2020, i3Dr secured funding to investigate the feasibility of developing existing intelligent robotic systems to improve production processes within the energy-intensive foundation industries (Metals, Cement, Glass, Chemicals, Ceramics, and Paper manufacturing). Together, the foundation industries are responsible for 10% of the UK's total carbon emissions and to meet the government's ambitious net-zero targets, these historic industries need new technologies to streamline their processes. i3DR worked with Lucideon and Glass Technology Services to deliver this project, a Fast Start competition under The Transforming Foundation Industries (TFI) programme, overseen by @innovateuk, part of UK Research and Innovation. Meet the Team behind i3D. Dr Lahiru Lakshan Lulbadda graduated from the @university-of-greenwich with a PhD in Engineering. He has a wide range of research interests in electrical and electronics engineering, such as optical methods and sensor development for particle technology applications. As such, his thesis was: “A modelling approach to predict spatially distributed fine particle concentrations during the filling process of a cylindrical silo”. Lahiru joined us in July 2019 to further our work in electronics and 3D vision engineering. He continues lecturing at the University of Greenwich on various subjects, including Materials for Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Control engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer programming (C and C++ languages) and Computer Hardware Systems. He is a Member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology and a Member of the @institute-of-electrical-and-electronics-engineers. Outside of work, Lahiru continues to tinker with gadgets - (apparently, his wife doesn't mind!) and attempts to train his cat, Poppy, to fetch his slippers, so far with limited success. 𝐢𝟑𝐃 𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬 - 𝑠ℎ𝑎𝑝𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑜𝑢𝑟 𝑙𝑒𝑔𝑎𝑐𝑦 𝑡ℎ𝑟𝑜𝑢𝑔ℎ 𝑖𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑙𝑙𝑖𝑔𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑣𝑖𝑠𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑎𝑝𝑝𝑙𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑠. #meettheteam #meettheteammonday #hardwareengineer #electronics

The UK has an extensive transport infrastructure system which needs regular inspection. Tunnels, bridges, manhole covers, drain covers, railway tracks, and viaducts - the UK has thousands of installations that require monitoring and upkeep. Making repairs to many of these puts human operators in hazardous situations, either high up, near water, or close to transport such as cars or trains. It also requires working in low lighting and with curved surfaces underfoot. i3D provides stereo vision systems that can be robotically mounted and deployed remotely, limiting human risk. Stereo vision offers a more robust, more cost-effective solution to remote inspection than other 3D imaging technologies, such as time-of-flight and LiDAR. Get in touch if you would like to discuss how our stereo vision systems can be implemented to make your inspection processes faster and more robust. 𝐢𝟑𝐃 𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬 - 𝑠ℎ𝑎𝑝𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑜𝑢𝑟 𝑙𝑒𝑔𝑎𝑐𝑦 𝑡ℎ𝑟𝑜𝑢𝑔ℎ 𝑖𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑙𝑙𝑖𝑔𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑣𝑖𝑠𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑎𝑝𝑝𝑙𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑠. https://bit.ly/45G8FhK

Robots have long been integrated with various sensors and systems and deployed in conflict areas, for example, sweeping for hidden explosive devices, monitoring air quality and explosives investigations, and removing human (and canine!) operators from the equation. Now, as part of a project to develop a complete telexistence system, integrating telepresence, robotic and haptic technologies onto a single platform, a team from the AMRC at the The University of Sheffield is exploring stereo vision camera systems to capture medical data in battlefield scenarios. i3Dr is providing Phobos, our high-resolution stereo camera, for the project. #teleexistence #robotics #remotedeployment

Our SGM algorithm was developed for Mars Rover missions and is currently installed on Perseverance. Consequently, our software has world-leading stereo matching capabilities, delivering a dense point cloud for 3D analysis for stereo vision systems. Our proprietary software uses an adaptive leased squares correlation technique for data matching, which is more efficient than cross-matching. It offers high matching accuracy and combines area-based and edge-based analysis. It can be applied to multi-spectral and multi-temporal images to feature extraction, change detection, and line following, making it highly flexible for terrain mapping. Our technologies are versatile and adaptable. They can be seamlessly integrated with machine learning algorithms and tailored for a wide range of industries and environments, including high-temperature and radiative conditions. 𝐢𝟑𝐃 𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬 - 𝑠ℎ𝑎𝑝𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑜𝑢𝑟 𝑙𝑒𝑔𝑎𝑐𝑦 𝑡ℎ𝑟𝑜𝑢𝑔ℎ 𝑖𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑙𝑙𝑖𝑔𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑣𝑖𝑠𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑎𝑝𝑝𝑙𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑠. https://bit.ly/42PYXYa
