Celebrating Life, Dignifying Death

About us

Hospice in the Weald is a charity providing compassionate, individualised, holistic and supportive care for all people with a terminal illness, their families, and carers. Serving communities across West Kent and East Sussex, we provide Hospice care through our Hospice Day Service, Hospice in the Home, Counselling Support Service, In-Patient Ward, and from next year, at the UK’s first Cottage Hospice. It costs over £7 million to run the Hospice with only 11% of our funding provided by the government. We are reliant on the support of the community we serve to donate and fundraise in order to maintain our vital services. Over 1,000 volunteers give their time to the Hospice helping us run efficiently and effectively as part of the local community. We strive to make death as dignified as possible and to celebrate the lives of those we care for, however long they might have left to live, by providing medical, nursing, emotional and spiritual care.

It was a pleasure to welcome another MP to Hospice in the Weald yesterday; Tonbridge’s Tom Tugendhat met with Nick Farthing, our Chief Executive and Paul Madden, our Director of Care Services, as he toured the Pembury site. 🏡 🟢 Tom explored the offerings available at the Hospice, speaking with Steph Hall, our Head of Living Well, and Sarah Wells, our Ward Team Leader. The visit also included conversations about funding, the recent budget, and plenty more. We thank Tom for his time and appreciate his support as the Hospice continues to offer free care to adults and children in our community facing a terminal illness. 🤝

This week’s #ThankYouThursday goes to Nigel Bragg and Declan's Dragons for winning the silver medal at this year’s Tonbridge Lions Dragon Boat Race! 🐉🥈 They finished just a fraction of a second from gold and raised an incredible £2,110 in memory of their dear friend and crewmate, Declan Martin who they lost five years ago. What a fantastic achievement, well done everyone! 👏

Yesterday, MP for Tunbridge Wells Mike Martin visited Hospice in the Weald to meet with our Chief Executive, Nick Farthing and Jan Thirkettle, Director of Clinical Excellence. 🟢 🏡 Mike toured the Hospice and explored our Living Well Centre with Steph Hall, Head of Living Well, and our Pembury Ward with Kerry Norman, Head of In-Patient Care. The team introduced him to families accessing our support, and Mike spoke with us about the current funding crisis, along with the impact of the recent budget and increased National Insurance. It was a pleasure to welcome Mike to the Hospice for the first time since his election. We look forward to working with him as we continue to provide free care to adults and children facing a terminal illness. 🤝

A big #ThankYouThursday to Jack Coombs who ran the Reykjavik Marathon in August, in memory of his mum, Jackie Oliver. He absolutely smashed his fundraising target, raising £2,870 for the Hospice. Thank you and well done Jack! 🎽🏃♂ 🗨️ "At the end of last summer, I sadly lost my mum to breast cancer. Whilst it was and has been a tough year for everyone in my family, Hospice in the Weald provided invaluable support which we will forever be grateful for," said Jack. "They also took care of my girlfriend’s grandad in his final days and provided a sense of community in what can feel like a lonely time. A year later, I decided to challenge myself to the Reykjavik marathon in the hope of raising some money for them!"
