In the latest episode of “Life in Seven Songs” created by the San Francisco Standard, Norman Foster, Founder and Executive Chairman at Foster + Partners, reminisces about his beginnings, sharing his life milestones and the music that has shaped his journey. Discussing the most memorable and impactful experience of designing The Reichstag in Berlin he explains... “As we peeled away the layers of history from the 60s, I think we realised that it had the imprints of war, graffiti, the scars of war. And rather than try to sanitise, to homogenise, to cleanse that, we felt it was important that it was retained for future generations, that that fabric was more powerful than any reconstruction in a museum. In that sense, it was a living evidence of the history of the past, the transition from war to peace.” Norman Foster’s song choices: 1. I'll Walk Beside You — John McCormack 2. Symphony No. 7 "Sinfonia antartica": I. Prelude. Allegro maestoso — Ralph Vaughan Williams 3. West Side Story, Act 1: Prologue (Original Broadway Cast Recording) — Jerome Robbins with music by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim 4. The Twist — Chubby Checker 5. Prelude & Fugue No. 12 in F Minor, BWV 857, WTC I — J.S. Bach 6. King Arthur, Z. 628, Act 3: Prelude While Cold Genius Rises - Frost Scene. "What Power Art Thou" — Henry Purcell 7. Bésame Mucho — Andrea Bocelli 🔗 Find out more: https://lnkd.in/eTg2vwBq 🎧 Spotify: https://lnkd.in/e6TnrA8c 🎧 Apple: https://lnkd.in/ejvPnapN #Architecture #Design #LifeInSevenSongs

A new urban vision has been revealed for the revitalisation of Antakya and the wider Hatay province in southeast Türkiye, following the devastating Türkiye-Syria earthquake on 6 February 2023. The masterplan vision for Antakya has been developed by Foster + Partners, Buro Happold, MIC-HUB, and leading Turkish practices DB Architects and KEYM Urban Renewal Centre. It is part of a wider design-led revitalisation process spearheaded by Türkiye Design Council (TDC), an NGO that has brought together international and local architecture, planning, urban design and engineering experts in the wake of the earthquake. The Foster + Partners masterplan covers a 30-square kilometre area of Antakya, Hatay’s capital district and one of antiquity’s most important cities (Antioch), and a set of eight design principles to define emerging plans for the wider Hatay province. It builds on earlier and ongoing work by TDC’s Hatay Collaboration Group of architects to quickly and carefully develop plans to rebuild the region. “We have been inspired by the resilience of the people of Antakya, and share their passion for their unique, historic city. Our strategy does not offer a ‘one size that fits all’ vision. It balances the historic spirit of the place with improvements and enhancements that will support a sustainable future for Antakya. We have developed the vision underpinned by the fact that reconstruction following a natural disaster is not merely about buildings but about rebuilding communities, feelings of safety and belonging, and rebuilding trust.” Bruno Moser, Senior Partner and Head of Urban Design at Foster + Partners. Türkiye Design Council's revitalisation efforts are being supported by the Turkish Ministry of Environment, Urbanisation and Climate Change, and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. 🔗 Read the full article: https://brnw.ch/21wLAZI #Architecture #Design #UrbanDesign #AntakyaMasterplan

At Foster + Partners, we strive to embed inclusive thinking from strategy to completion, thinking beyond technical code compliance, to embrace diversity in mind, body, and space. Over the past 18-months we have been working closely with Sociability, on a journey to bring diverse disability-led perspectives into Foster + Partners inclusive design guidance to better understand how people experience the built environment and our projects. As part of this journey, our inclusive design specialists and our Disabilities Network hosted a collaborative panel discussion which delved into the different experiences people have in the built environment and explored how design can be harnessed as a tool for empowerment and social transformation; an inclusive and resilient future for all. The panel, titled 'Experiencing Architecture', welcomed Mei-Yee Man Oram, Access and Inclusive Environments Lead at Arup; Jos Boys, Co-founder of The DisOrdinary Architecture Project; Christopher Laing, Founder of Deaf Architecture Front; Dr Amy Kavanagh, Disability Activist and Access Professional and Saida Ahmed, Actor, Poet and Writer. The discussion was moderated by Matt Pierri, Founder and CEO of Sociability and Suzan Ucmaklioglu, Inclusive Design Specialist at Foster + Partners. We extend our gratitude to all panellists and attendees for their valuable contributions.
