We know we need to cut production and consumption of fashion by 75-95%. At the same time we need to regenerate ecosystems, promote biodiversity, soil health and conserve water 💦. We need big solutions like ZHDC and Blue sign that reduce water use and lower the chemical impact too. Organic, regenerative cotton farming is also very important in this. My Monday motivation is to share with you, and with great urgency, our Carbon Literacy training as a lever towards climate action, decarbonisation, biodiversity promotion, and social justice. This weekend I was working with a colleague leading a clothing craft supplier in Bangladesh, who mentioned that after the height of summer in April with temperatures of 46 degrees, the cyclone a fortnight ago had brought down the heat for five days, then up it had jumped AGAIN to 42 degrees. “The humidity is so high that people can barely work, the local authority is asking children to stay at home for shelter rather than go to school and only if essential for adults to leave their homes. Also, drinking water is running dry, the tube wells have run dry, with only rich people with expensive pumps able to access drinking water and the others, where lucky, and on a distribution route, are getting water delivered three times a day, but must boil as it isn’t safe to drink. No one can sleep, we are exhausted and worried about how we will cope”. This is what global heating means, it is disruptive and dangerous for everyone. We have an urgent need to transform how we do business and how we consume, to make a difference to the increasing numbers of people experiencing the worst of global heating. We all have a role to play in creating the systems change we so urgently need. If you are a designer, buyer, merchandiser, work in logistics, finance or retail this course will start your journey.
