The older the coal mine, the deeper the extraction and the GREATER the methane emissions per tonne of coal mined 📈 As a result, ageing underground mines run by 🇷🇴’s hard coal company, Jiu Valley Energy Complex (CEVJ), are highly methane-emitting relative to the amount of coal they produce 🏭💨 Ember’s analysis found their coal to be an average of THREE times more methane-emitting than the EU limit that will come into effect in 2027 🚨 🇷🇴 has announced a coal closure target for 2030.. NEW | Without plans in place to address gassy hard coal production, Romania risks penalties under new EU laws to cut methane ⚠ 🚩 It has only ONE year left to make sure its coal mines comply and avoid risking EU climate targets ⏳ “Romania’s hidden hard coal production comes at a high cost to climate,” warned Ember analyst Dr Sabina Assan. “When new EU rules come into effect, Romania will need to rapidly address this or face penalties.” Methane, one of the most potent greenhouse gases, continues to grow at record rates, causing about 47% of the observed global heating from 2010-2019 🌍🌡️ Coal mining is the single LARGEST source of methane leaks in the 🇪🇺 energy sector and therefore needs to be taken seriously to achieve climate targets 🎯 Good news is: solutions are readily available to reduce methane’s impact on climate, including ways to put it to use for heating and electricity ⚡💪 Read more: https://lnkd.in/gfXR5djw
