Eastern Europe and Central Asia (EECA) has the fastest growing HIV epidemic in the world and the number of people on treatment is far below the United Nations' global targets for 2025: 🔶 95% of all people living with HIV know their status 🔶 Of these, 95% should be on antiretroviral treatment (ART) 🔶 Of those on ART treatment, 95% should have viral suppression (where levels of HIV are so low they are undetectable). At the Elton John AIDS Foundation, we are committed to making lasting change and ensuring no one gets left behind. Last week, we announced a further $25 million in funding to address the HIV crisis in EECA through the extension of our ground-breaking RADIAN partnership with Gilead Sciences. "It doesn’t make any difference how many services are delivered. If they are not driven by the community, they won’t work," said Anne Aslett, CEO of the Elton John AIDS Foundation. This year’s #AIDS2024 conference called on the urgent need to ‘Put People First’ to effectively, and equitably, get us to the finish line. Here are some topline takeaways from the conference, focusing on why putting people first is essential: https://lnkd.in/e6_sfxdP International AIDS Society

With the UK Government now looking to refresh the HIV action plan from 2025, Elton John AIDS Foundation, National AIDS Trust and Terrence Higgins Trust are working together to ensure that it will drive forward our joint goal of England becoming the first country in the world to end new cases of HIV. Through a series of events, our organisations will be convening discussions and hearing from people living with HIV, clinicians, public health experts, HIV charities and all who wish to contribute towards creating a unified message on what the new HIV action plan must deliver. We’re here to help break down confusing healthcare terms. Today, we’re talking about U=U. Undetectable = Untransmittable. U=U explains how the transmission of HIV can be stopped. When a person living with HIV is on effective treatment, it lowers the level of HIV in the blood. When levels of HIV are so low, this is referred to as being undetectable, or virally suppressed. And this means that you can’t pass HIV on!

“We seek to lead with compassion, inclusion, human rights, public health, and scientific evidence. This approach is equally vital in drug policy. It mirrors the blueprint that has driven the successes of the HIV movement,” Elton John and former New Zealand Prime Minister and Chair of The Global Commission on Drug Policy, Helen Clark, share in a co-authored piece for The Telegraph. In light of #AIDS2024’s theme, "Putting People First", Elton and Helen discuss how marginalised communities, particularly people who use drugs, continue to get left behind due to punitive laws. Both leaders urge for the global focus on funding and implementing effective harm reduction services. Read the full article: https://lnkd.in/eZhjhn_P
