Last night, Computer Weekly was awarded an Orwell Special Prize as part of the annual Orwell Prizes – one of (arguably, the) most prestigious awards programmes in British journalism. The Orwell Prizes were established in the name of George Orwell by The Orwell Foundation, the charity set up by the writer’s estate to recognise the very best in political and investigative writing in journalism, fiction and non-fiction. George Orwell’s son was at the awards ceremony. An Orwell Special Prize is rarely given – the last one was in 2017. Previous winners include BBC Newsnight and legends of British journalism such as Marie Colvin, Clive James, and Christopher Hitchens. We won for our coverage of the Post Office scandal. Fittingly, the prize was collected by Karl Flinders who has led our campaigning since 2010, and by Rebecca Thomson, the former Computer Weekly reporter whose story first exposed the scandal back in 2009. (If you watched the ITV drama, Rebecca was the journalist character from CW featured). The Orwell Prize caps off a fantastic summer awards season for Computer Weekly, when we have also won: - BSME - The British Society of Magazine Editors Campaign of the Year - BSME - The British Society of Magazine Editors Science, Health and Technology Writer of the Year for Karl - AOP Association of Online Publishers Journalist of the Year for Karl - PPA Campaign of the Year Highly Commended We're very grateful for all this recognition of our work - and especially proud and humbled to receive the Orwell Prize. Police Scotland chose not to consult the data regulator before deploying its cloud-based digital evidence-sharing system, despite identifying a number of “high risks” with the data processing, freedom of information disclosures have revealed. The disclosures also show that although the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) had previously been informed of the risks and acknowledged them, it was asking for clarification on their seriousness and why a formal consultation was not sought nearly three months after the system’s pilot deployment with live personal data. The correspondence disclosed between Police Scotland and the ICO reveals the force believed it was not necessary to formally consult with the regulator about DESC because there were “mitigations” in place and there was “ongoing and detailed engagement” with the regulator. These mitigations include the use of UK-based datacentres. https://lnkd.in/e2wzsQUN However, the same FOI disclosures contained admissions from Microsoft to Scottish policing bodies that it cannot guarantee the sovereignty of UK policing data hosted on its hyperscale public cloud infrastructure: https://lnkd.in/ezpaBNxm It also contained guidance drawn up by the ICO on police cloud deployments, which highlighted some potential data transfer mechanisms the regulator thinks can clear up ongoing legal issues.
